...Windows media player works well with the shark codec. Tested it brieflywith downloaded videos without trouble so I uninstalled VLC and GOM. ...

I used to have the same problem with a pay site that I used. I contacted their helpdesk, who told me the problem could be the buffer setting in WMP. Even though WMP does not actually load (I was watching and listening via IE) the settings are still accessed. I checked the buffer (in WMP/options/performance) and it was 1 sec. I changed it to 60 secs and the problem was solved :)

    Good luck :)

Any idea why it comes up as Krusty.exe?? ~
    C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\Krusty.exe

TICK to FIX these in hijack ~
    O2 - BHO: LastClosedTab - {e15e75e9-a653-42a3-8d05-f2f7e309bdca} - mscoree.dll (file missing)

The next thing id try is switch on windows firewall and uninstall zonealarm

    then ~
    Download CCLEANER
    http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds/downloading-slim
Run the CLEANER scan (UNTICK 'cookies')
Then run the REGISTRY scan (Backup the registry when it asks)

    reboot

    Download GLARY UTILITIES
    http://www.glaryutilities.com/download/gusetup_slim.exe
    Run the ONE CLICK scan

  • Thanks RIK, I renamed it Krusty on advice from a website saying it helps overcome the risk that malware may avoid hijackthis.

Windows firewall? Is it safe? I heard it's lightweight.

I now use Microsoft security essentials in place of Spybot etc. It's my anti-malware prog. Fixing it wouldn't cause it to stop working?
    Ta.

Security essentials is an 'all in one'
If your using that you should uninstall Avira
Thats very possibly why your having the problems

As for windows firewall ~ its actually very safe. Except it doesnt allow (By default) overall control

If you wish you could replace with PC TOOLS FIREWALL

  • Hmmm..

I only very recently installed Security essentials. I had the video stuttering problems way before then. It was in an attempt to sort it that i sequentially removed spybot, SAS and others. Symptoms predated the installation.

Avira seems to have such a small memory footprint (currently 1112K), Sec Ess is currently using 7892K. CPU use (from task manager) is negligible.

The main bulk currently is DWM - desktop windows manager, about 52536K and Yahoo messenger (42804K). DWM is also using the most CPU in idle.

When I'm online, streaming videos, IE uses the bulk of memory and CPU.

I've downloaded but not installed Comodo. Silly, but I'm nervous about moving away from Zonealarm as I've been well protected inspite of these current niggles.

I've run ccleaner several times and will do so again. I'll use the glary thing too.

    Thanks for all help.
