Reading this has just reminded me that MOST card manufacturers quote, say, 133x as the speed when this is ONLY FOR READING, and the card is actually slower for writing.

I've stuck to Kingston recently, since they actually seem to write at the quoted speed, which is the important thing for use in cameras.

This is interesting. I posted this in the Techie Forum but have not had a response yet:
I have a Canon camcorder with a camera facility which can take multiple still photos when the shutter is pressed – several a second.

I have bought a cheap 256 Mb SD card and whilst it copes with single photos, multiple photos cause an error display which can only be cleared by formatting the SD card. I suspected that it was because the card could not cope with the speed and this thread seems to confirm this.

However how can I tell what specification of SD Card I require to overcome this problem?

If you are correct that the manufacturer's quoted speed is only for reading, it won't help me decide which to buy.

I don't suppose I will take many multiple shots. However it has a nice facility where it takes 3 photos (under/normal/over exposed) which could be handy.

I thought (silly me) that all SD cards had different speeds for reading and writing. See this

Spec. for mymemory 1GB 133x card
    - Up to 20MB/sec. read speed
    - Up to 9MB/sec. write speed
    - Size: (24mm x 32mm x 2.1mm)

and spec for Kingston 133x card
    Kingston 1GB ultimate card
    Dimensions — .94'' x 1.25'' x .08'' (24mm X 32mm X 2.1mm)
    Speed Rating — 1GB - 133x: 23MB/sec. read rate, 20MB/sec. write rate
    2GB - 120x: 21MB/sec. read rate, 18MB/sec. write rate
    Operating Temperature — 0º to 60º C / 32º to 140º F

So looks like the mymemory card reads 133x speed but writes at 60x speed. The Kingston card read and writes at 133x speed.

So I would say that the mymemory 133x card then is really a 60x card as writing speed is the most important for a camera.

May explain some of Speedy Joes problem but still the memory card should be quicker than the 40x Corsair.

Get what you pay for I suppose.... The kingston 1GB 133x card is 27quid, SanDisk 133x card is 36quid and the myemory 133x(really 60x) is 14quid!!!! So if you have 250quid+ camera then I would perhaps stay away from the mymemory card and invest in the dearer 133x cards which actually read and write at 133x speed ie 20MB/s.

It should apparently mean a multiple of 150kB/sec basic transfer speed.

I can appreciate there may be ways of skewing the performance rating but a card that should be over three times faster but is actually only just over half as fast as another card, well I'm afraid someone has made a big mistake somewhere.

The mymemory card is rated as up to 9MB/s write speed. This makes it a 60x write performance. It's the read speed they are quoting which is up to 20MB/s which works out at 133x. I also think this is taking the P..., but don't think the standards are clear when manufacturers state the speed rating of a card.

You really need to be careful and make sure you find out the Read & Write speeds before deciding on a purchase. I went for the PNY 133x card in the end 'cos it's quoted as 133x (20MB/s) Write and 150x (22.5MB/s) Read. So here's an example of a manufacturer using the Write speed rather than the Read speed. My device probably won't be able to utilise the full potential anyway, but should be a little future proof.

The PNY card costs almost 40% more than the mymemory card, so a case of you pays your money...

  • I only buy electronics from places that allow you a return for any reason. You don't have to argue about whether an item is faulty because you can return it and just say "I changed my mind"!
Included in those are https://www.viking-direct.co.uk, Good old Argos and https://www.svp.co.uk (I'm sure there are others) SVP in particular show that you don't necessarily have to pay more if you want good after sales service!

I have been known to order 2 similar items and get them home to compare side by side and return the lesser.
A bit extreme, but we all work hard for our money, and I for one like to get the best value I can.

Hi guys i need to buy a memory card for my SLVR phone. The motorola have on their site is this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000BRC75S/202-4268756-9108625?v=glance&n=560798&s=electronics&v=glance.

Also on amazon is this onehttp://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000CDE6IM/202-4268756-9108625?v=glance&n=560798&s=electronics&v=glance

They both look exactly the same apart from one says transflash, what does this mean, is transflash better? Will only transflash work.

These to cards are both sold on amzon market place so i cant use by £20 gift voucher. Amazon themselves also sell this card http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000FFURIU/202-4268756-9108625?v=glance&n=560798&s=electronics&v=glance.

Will the micro sd from this fit the SLVR? Also will the main card work in my DIGITAL camera? At the moment i have this card in it
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00006JUGV/202-4268756-9108625?v=glance&n=560798&s=electronics&v=glance

The two cards do look different as the one I have at the moment has straight edges and the other one has gaps in the edges and the bottom?

    thanks for any help tom
