Two foreign plasterers have been dropped at my doorstep this morning to complete a plastering job. There were arranged by the electrician who was sent by the company fitting my kitchen. They are skimming the four walls at a cost £350.00 inc materials. Would you make any checks towards their legality to work here? Im also concerned as to whether they are getting the full amount for the job. They do not speak very good English. Yes I know i probably wouldnt make any checks into someone sent from Manchester but they arent.
Would you investigate further or pay up and shut up?

So as long as the job is done properly, I wouldn't grumble.Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0

Personally I have worked in countries where my language skills weren't the best, and legally...AND they people were very nice to me. It can happen that people work abroad and have yet to pick up the lingo well. Brits in Spain are the worst culprits for this.
If they are legit they will have papers, probably EU citizens and as legal as you or I to work here. Ask them where they came from. The payment....that's something else, they can get ripped off sometimes. Just ask them their hourly rate, it should be min wage.
You pay for plasterers not English professors after all don't you? One of my neighbours is Polish and works here....he's picked up decent language ability now and I'd happily have him or his buddies work for me anytime compared to some Brits I know.
The price seems good as long as they do a decent job BTW.

Your electrician is responsible. If you delay these guys, he will be within his rights to charge you for their down time.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

I wouldn't worry about it at all. One of my fitters uses a couple of Polish guys for all his plastering works. They are by far the best plasterers I have ever seen (and I've been through a fair few) They work non-stop all day, apart from 30 mins for lunch, always clean up after themselves and customers love them. Just because someone is foreign, it doesn't mean they aren't any good!If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Ive been in the building game for 24 yrs and very rarely meet any tradesman who has more than 30 minutes for lunch, in fact most Self employed guys I work with tend to work the whole day without stopping at all....
Totally agree with your final comment too...:D
There are good tradesmen and bad cowboys and nationality is no is not a clue to either.0 -

I agree with the whole 30 mins for lunch, but most of the tradesmen I know stop for breakfast/coffee breaks or ciggie breaks (I don't blame them though, so do I lol)If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Indeed..be happy it's costing less in tea bags, boiling the kettle etc!
It's still a mystery to me how british tradesmen can drink so much tea/coffee and not be in and out of the little boy's room all day long. Or maybe i don't wanna know..sister had builders taking the proverbial with the mugs..if you catch my drift!0 -
