Terminating Carphone Warehouse/02 Contract - The easiest way

Hi Guys, i'm almost at the end of a Carphone Warehouse 02 18 mth contract [ending 1st week Jan.) and i'd like to know the "easiest" way to end it.

Is it best to go the formal route & write to them (30 days before the contract's due to end) or is it "easier/less hassle" to just say i want to swap over to Pay As You Go?

The reason i ask, is because i've heard that CPW/02 don't make it easy for customers to leave.

All replies appreciated.

If you dont want to keep your number just give them the 30 days notice, they may offer you other deals, just refuse them.
Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.

There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies

This doesn't always go to plan though, i wish it were that simple. In fact, i've been searching for the actual address you have to write to (for terminating contracts) but cannot find it on their website.

I know this thread is pretty old, but this is what i'm afraid of: (Note post's #4 & #7)

Well, i seem to have found the answer to my own question (from this thread) http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=619139&page=6

For anyone else that may need this info:
You have to phone CPW around 34 days before your contract ends & they should give you a Ref No. to quote in your cancellation letter.

You then send your cancellation letter (via Recorded Delivery) to their DISCONNECTIONS DEPT:-

    Disconnections
    Carphone Warehouse
    PO BOX 345
    Unit 19
    Southampton
    SO30 2NR

    Freephone Customer Services 0800 049 0049
  • Then again, after reading most of the horrific incidents in that thread (link above)......maybe it's best to just port the number to PAYG.

Most of that is rubbish. 60 days before send the letter to that add4ress recorded delivery. DON'T call them or wait until 34 days - it's a complete lie that you need ANY "disconnection" code. Ignore anything they tell you over the phone - they are now a completely disreputable, dishonest company who wouldn't know the truth if it bit them in the...

    Errrm,....... OK.

Will try that then & update you all with the outcome.

I can sense this'll be fun.

    NOT.

As noted they claim you need a disconnection code - basically its a chance for them to try and sell you another contract. There is no legal basis for this its not part of your contract and even if it was it would be laughed out of court

    You have two choices
    1) phone the number and ask for a dixconnection code - how hard a sell they will make depends on the sales person + how far behind quota they are and how gullible you sound. You can get a code quite quickly if you are curt vergiing on rude on the other hand they may try and tempt you witha decent offer They do seem to have nmore leeway than most. You still have to send them a letter
    2) just send them a letter - make sure it's registered - as noted above and ask for PAC code

Whether you want to swap to PAYG or just terminate doesn't mnmatter

I left COW simply because of their insistance that the code was required and their refusal to give me an address to write to - it is a dishonest tactic and I try to avoid dealing with dishonest firms
    TANSTAAFL !
  • I had an argument with them a week ago, said I was going to hand in my notice on my contract. I was given the address, no attempt to keep me. I wrote a letter, and two days later I was texted my PAC code. This week I'm signing up to a new contract and porting my number.

I'm wondering now whether to send the letter to the disconnections dept. (as above) as it seems they are more unlikely to sign for it at this address.
So would i be better off sending it to the official CPW address - 1 Portal Way, London W3 6RS?

Anyone who's cancelled a CPW contract, out of interest which address did you send your cancellation letter to?
  • As above, I wrote to the Southampton PO Box address and it's been accepted.
