In case it sounds like I have a lot of losses that is three spread over about 6 years and I actually no longer use recorded for ebay or Amazon items.

  • WOW I'm amazed I have to say.(Was even more amazed when read your first sentence as "I had to send a book to a major UK university 400 years ago" :D lol
Well thanks for that, maybe I should reconsider and not to use recorded. Also before the new barcode scanning they often failed to display online that parcel was delivered, I was getting positives stating item was received but RM website wasn't showing as delivered. That was quite a few times and that made me doubt the whole purpose of recorded.

How do you claim for loss of standard mail(I mean what sort of "proof of value" do you give them?)

The claim for any standard mail, including recorded is exactly the same. You need your proof of posting, either a free COP that you can get from RM or your recorded slip and for ebay items a print out of the item value taken from ebay. usually they accept the ebay value and refund you that plus the actual postage paid, so if you charge too much for packing you can lose out a bit.

However the last claim I did the RM asked me for my proof of purchase as well, luckily it was on my business account so I sent in my invoice showing the item cost and added in my costs for purchasing item and they paid that. I'm not sure what I would have done if the loss had been on my private account which is all stuff that's just lying around and for which I couldn't possibly hope to find receipts. All standard mail including recorded covers up to £39 of loss.

Incidentally, if you have recorded items that never update to delivered online you can make a claim for the postage costs of them as RM have not fulfilled their obligation. Usually rather than just reimburse you the 75p they send you a book of stamps for each, so well worth doing.

So if a lost ebay item was sold for £50 and not sent recorded would you still get £39 of it back? I only ask as I was told by a cashier in the PO that if this £50 item was sent recorded it would be an invalid claim as I would have stated that it was worth £39 rather than the actual £50 and therefore get £0 back. I thought they would just pay up to £39 as in standard delivery?!? (Hope this makes sense)

There is always confusion about this point. MY PO tells me that items over £39 are not covered for any part of the loss unless special delivery is used. They interpret the rules as meaning that the item must be valued under £39 to be covered, not that you get only £39 back even if the item is valued higher.

Hoever I am sure that others on here have received £39 back on expensive items when they produce a COP.

Recorded makes no difference as it is just standard mail.
