Advice needed - what sort of phone should I get?

Ok, apologies first for such a vague request but I've always had really basic phones until now, just used to call home and the occasional text. However, I have been looking into getting an Ipod touch when a friend suggested I get an iphone instead as it offers lots of features. OH went pale when he saw the initial cost and monthly outlay so I wondered what my alternatives were.

This is what I am looking for:

I want something I can use to play games and general "while the time away" features whilst waiting to pick the children up from their various activities.
I want to be able to listed to mp3s (although I do already have a nano)
I'd quite like a decent camera as don't have one of those either
I'd like to be able to access the internet when I'm out and about (I think this means I need 3G)
But I'd also like to be able to use wifi so that I can use the internet from home if the kids are on the computer.
I would make calls on it and send texts occasionally although I'm more an email person myself
I'd like something that was a bit of a treat as I've always had bog standard gadgets before and feel as though it's time to get a bit of luxury!

So, is an iphone the best option or is there another phone out there that would be better for me?
I'm on PAYG at the moment and top up about £20 a month and am worried that if I was going to be using the internet a lot then the cost would rocket.

All advice very much appreciated!

I think the nokia 5800 ticks all your boxes but I dont need wifi so opted for the sony ericsson c903 which ticks most boxes and comes in white and purple;), good battery, loads of games available, internet and lovely smiles if you use them and I stick my mp3s on my memory card. I couldnt justify the costs involved with the I phone.
The more i save the more i can spend:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I'd definitely say the 5800. I have it, and they come with an 8GB memory. The camera is only 3.2 megapixels, but the lens is a decent one (Carl Zeiss) so the pictures come out better quality than a bigger megapixel camera with a cheaper lens. You can use any headphones in it (3.5mm jack - normal size) and it has wifi so you can use it at home and normal internet so you can use it whilst you're out and about (my usual is find a place with wifi, buy coffee and check my emails/news etc)

My mum has the Nokia, it's a fab phone!
I'm up for a new contract in Jan and want to get it, or the equivilent, I cant see the point in paying loads of money for the Iphone when the Nokia would do everythig i need it too (including posting on MSE!)

  • Another vote for the 5800 here! I've had it a good few months now and I'm really happy with it. Haven't had any problems with it apart from video calling but that was more of an issue with Voda than with the phone. Only bad thing is that the Ovi store isn't anywhere near as good as the App Store for the iPhone. I just can't pay 200 pounds for a phone and then pay more than I am now per month, its just not justifiable.

I have an iPod touch too though, couldn't live without that!!

Got a good deal, 300 minutes unlimited text and unlimited internet for 35pm on voda on 18m contract with quite a bit of cashback and free accessories (staff offer!)

    Hope thats helped you

  • Many thanks for all the advice - seems like the 5800 is the recommendation with possibly an Ipod touch as well ;)

Will go and do some research now ready for my Christmas list!!

Couldn't have put it better, the Nokia 5800 is a great phone. If you feel like waiting a month or two (and have some spare cash!) the N900 will be available soon.
