Somebody mentioned purple sprouting broccoli earlier - yum! Is it too late to sow it now? I don't have a greenhouse, so it would go straight into a big pot in the garden.

Also has anybody tried growing romanesco? (Is it a cauliflower or a broccoli - looks like the offspring of both!) I bought some from the market last summer and it was delish. When I went back to get some more, they didn't have any :(

I am growing Summer PSB, packet says you can sow up to June, if you have lots of seeds left you could try growing them as seed sprouts, (good to add raw to salads and allegedly super healthy:j )

Also growing Romanesco Broccoli, never grown it before, but my mother-in-law says it is wonderful. I'd say it is too late to grow from seed unless you are 'oop north' (packet says late spring) but you could try to buy some seedlings ( mother in laws says the bird's like to pull them up, so hangs a 'washing-line' of CDs over them)

Started pulling up some of the Onions that have been in over the winter & Garlic to. Really nice feeling knowing that you've grown it yourself. The flesh is so white, its fantastic.

The Radish's are nearly ready to, as are a few Lettace. Will be nice to add them to our salads.

Had a faliure with our Pumpkins though & not many of the Beetroot have germinated, might sow more seeds in the gaps.

Filled our allotment now, just got to keep ontop of the WEEDS !!!

Wow, this thread is fab!!! I have just discovered it and just in time.

I planted carrot, purple sprouting broccoli, parsnips, courgettes, sunflowers, and leeks, and a lot of them have grown really well but I was just starting to lose interest. I haven't got a veg patch yet and need to sort it out and was supposed to do it last weekend. Thought about just leaving them all to die or giving them to a friend cos I havne't really got a clue how to grow anything. But you have all inspired me and now I need to get my finger out and organised.

if anyone has any tips for me before I plant them out I will really appreciate them as I have nenver done anything like it before.

    Thanks

Went to B&Q yesterday and couldn't resist buying some more seeds :o I bought Mint (the last packet I put in hasn't germinated  ), Thyme, Rocket, Turnips and Pumpkins so I spent an hour or so last night sorting them out. Also bought a copy of "Vegetable and Herb Expert" (£5.99) but I've already used it twice so I'm figuring thats its been a worthwhile investment ;) Everything is looking great and I've already had a couple of lettuce harvests :D

My cut-and-come-again salad/salad bowl is romping away, and we have apples/strawberries/raspberries/currants forming which should be ready in the coming weeks. Looking forward to the first tasting :)
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

    Batgirl,

Just turn over & weed the area that you want to plant the veg in. As long as you get it into the ground & keep it wartered, it should be ok. Give the Courgettes some room as they will need it. Put the Carrotts & Parsnips in rows, they shouldn't need much attention.
When established in the ground, mulch with grass cuttings to retain more moisture in the soil.
I was at the same stage of Knowledge last October, you soon learn.... by your mistakes.
    Wishing you all the success.

    sorry for the delay
good idea for the potatoes, but will the bag survive soil and water - won't it rot?
I think their are lates but the most technical i can be is that they were red and came from the fridge!
    thanks for your advice

A black plastic bin bag will be fine - no it won't rot. Roll it down so it's the same height as the pot. Then, as add compost, unroll the top to accommodate the compost. Keep going until you reach the top of the bag.

My guess is that you have planted Desiree :) These are maincrop and won't be ready until September. You might try a few as new pots, but I think they'll just be "small" potatoes and won't have that "new potato" taste.

    Cheers
