Can I just nick some soil from another pot and maybe start the rocket off in a little pot inside so that I can pay it some attention & the foxes/ducks/cats/geese etc don't get to it?
Yep, don't see why not....go on and experiment!

Growing gooseberries. have a big (too big now) gooseberry bush which the birds brought.
I pruned it last winter but it's still rampant. Loads of gooseberries now which will be ready for picking at the end of this month / early next month.
Just have to be very vigilant for the damned sawfly which can reduce the bush to a skeleton overnight. Been successful last few years with just organic insecticide and keeping a keen eye on it.
Use the gooseberries to make gooseberry and strawberry crumbles which I used to take into work for the TAs and clerical staff I worked with.
We'll have to eat them all ourselves this year.Where now?0 -

Thanks
For borders I have a friend who swears by leaving grapefruit skins on the garden. The slugs hide under the grapefruit as they like the taste/smell which makes them easy for you to find and dispose of. No good for me as I could not stand eating the fruit and I am not going to buy them especially for the slugs. In our house we have 'slug patrol' every evening, I have figured out which plants they like the best and I inspect them every evening to remove them and throw them away. I can't believe I've not contributed yet to this post. I'm feeling very proud of myself and the children I care for. This year we've put a lot of effort into growing fruit and veg ourselves. We have lots of tubs (from the poundshop) and one bed that is about 3 metres long and a metre wide, plus pots on the windowsills and a couple of hanging baskets. We are growing a total of 19 different veg and fruit in (small quantities) - runner beans, peas, courgettes, squashes, cherry tomatoes, maincrop tomatoes, carrots, onions, spring onions, lettuce, sweetcorn, beetroot, spinach (ready for harvesting), cauliflowers, sprouts, cucumber, raspberries, redcurrants, strawberries.
I am really looking forward to reaping the harvest.I like to live in cloud cuckoo land :hello:0 -
I guess flowers are now blooming everywhere – hooray…:D Here’s a piccy of some Peonies. I can’t remember the name of this variety, the label is long lost, but as you can see she’s truly wonderful and gorgeous and everything – whoo hooo… hee hee.
The scent is incredibly strong almost overpowering …Gosh is that pollen on the end of my nose…. lol

Ooh they're gorgeous!
My sweet peas are flowering and smelling wonderful. We're just about to sit down and eat a salad of mixed leaves and herbs (all homegrown), and munch our homegrown strawberries. The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. Anyone?
Thanks0 -
To be honest, I've not grown any of those before, although I do now have two small pepper plants (and no greenhouse). I'm guessing the peas will need something to grow up - not sure about the others, or about pinching out shoots. The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal.
