i really need to save money and have been looking at doing some square foot gardening ( https://www.squarefootgardening.com )but am having trouble finding cheap coarse vermiculite.

    can anyone help?
I just looked at this square foot gardening link - it looks really good.
DH works for a company that packs loads of stuff in vermiculite so he's going to try to find out where they get it from.

    Hi again Chumana
Those courgettes look just like mine did! Watch out for them reaching 6-8ft long. (That's the plants not the actual courgettes!) I specifically looked for a packet labelled bush variety this time.
    I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.

Hi Bizzimum, thanks for replying, but I have absolutely no idea what variety they are and neither does she! I know zilch about growing anything and she probably knows even less but she's got her first house since leaving mum and dads and wants to try growing her own veggies and stuff. Was up there for a bbq earlier and had my camera with me so thought it might be easier to grab a pic and show you and see waht you think. She's growing some cucumbers as well so I took a pic of those too to see if you think they look ok. Told her she needs to get a pc sorted so she can come on here herself to get advice :D

    These are the corgettes:

    and these are cucumbers:

Can't see any flowers on any of them yet but I've read messages in this thread frompeople saying they got flowers so is she doing something wrong?

Thanks for the help, you lot are great! :D

It all looks great and just as it should be.
Suggest at this stage she does a big feed and then waters plenty.
Flowers and fruit will start happening within a week.
If she's not fussed about organic, Miracle Grow can't be beat or Organic economical easy option is 'Fish, blood and bone' which can be picked up at any garden centre or B&Q. Sprinkle round plants but be sure to only put it on the earth and not on the leaves.
Living on Earth can be expensive, but it does include an annual free trip around the Sun.

Hi all. This month in the veg patch I have lettuce, chilli, silverbeet, beetroot, potatoes and lots of strawberry seedlings in pots everywhere. As it's winter here the fence tends to block out the sun somewhat so not much happening. Went a bit mad yesterday with planting seeds in trays though as it was such a warm day. Got in brandywine toms, climbing beans, dwarf beans, butternut pumpkin, perennial capsicum, and a few others. Some I will plant out soon, others will have to stay in the mini greenhouse till end mid August or so when the weather starts to warm a little.

Happy to say that my sweet peas are finally starting to flower and are looking and smelling just gorgeous:D

Just eaten the first raspberry from the garden - lovely and sweet. Bit of a miracle considering we planted boring sticks a few months ago and didn't have a clue on timescale or anything.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

Ooooh wiggins, am very jealous, well done you. Would love to grow raspberries, but unfortunately don't think it's possible in our subtropical clime. Instead we have to pay ridiculous prices in the supermarket for a taste of the exotic :(

I am currently growing tomatoes from a grow bag and all is going well. Is it too late to grow any other veg at this time?

Old age isn't bad when you consider the alternative.

Hi Jos, brandywine are an old Amish heirloom tomato, quite large pinkish fruit. Can't see why it wouldn't grow in UK in summer, under glass perhaps?. Silverbeet you would probably recognise as swiss chard maybe? It's our warmer climate alternative to spinach:D
