:j Phew... I've just about rescued my tomatoes! Though the side shoots on most had grown so thick and strong that 'pinching' out was a job for the secateurs..... :o

Thanks for the help with that!

Some more advice would be very welcome: My chilli and pepper plants are now all about 8" high and quite bushy with shiny, healthy looking leaves. Currently I have them in pots about 6" high and 6" diameter. Is this sufficient or do I have to pot them on again to promote growth? How high do these plants grow? When should I expect them to bear fruit? And are they annuals or can I keep them in the greenhouse over the winter?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm sure someone will come along with some answers..... ;)

    Thanks!

    Annie

I have just been away for a week and my courgettes are flowering, there are some greenhouse strawberries ready. The tomato plants have shot up and the beans are getting long. These have all been grown from seed and the strawberries were offshoots from the existing ones.

    I feel so proud:)

I have just moved into a new house and have white currants growing in the garden. When do I know if they are ripe? A few are just starting to turn slightly pink in colour.

And what do I do with them once picked?

I also have raspberries, cherries, apples and pears. Am looking forward to those becoming ready to pick!!

Is there anything that I can start to grow in the veg garden, this late in the year?

Any advice gratefully received as have come from a small garden and growing fruit/veg is totally new to me.

    Hi Chumana
Sounds like your sister has a spreading variety of courgette plant. We grew these a couple of years back and they took over half the garden - and they were only planted growbags :D We've planted a bush variety this time for obvious reasons.
Hi Bizzimum, thanks for replying, but I have absolutely no idea what variety they are and neither does she! I know zilch about growing anything and she probably knows even less but she's got her first house since leaving mum and dads and wants to try growing her own veggies and stuff. Was up there for a bbq earlier and had my camera with me so thought it might be easier to grab a pic and show you and see waht you think. She's growing some cucumbers as well so I took a pic of those too to see if you think they look ok. Told her she needs to get a pc sorted so she can come on here herself to get advice :D

    These are the corgettes:

    and these are cucumbers:

Can't see any flowers on any of them yet but I've read messages in this thread frompeople saying they got flowers so is she doing something wrong?

Thanks for the help, you lot are great! :D

    Hi everyone,

I'm so excited. This year I am growing: potatoes in an old dustbin, tumbling tom tomatoes, moneymaker tomatoes, peppers, chillies, courgettes and I have just planted carrots, little gem lettuces and radishes in a raised bed OH has just put together for me.

Thanks for the response about the courgette flowers pickledtink, I was having the same problem myself and I had no idea why it was happening (first time grower!). I had heard that they are prolific but was beginning to think I wouldn't be successful. At least I know now!

Hoping for successful crops from them all. Fingers crossed.

Does anyone know how you do cuttings from strawberry plants?

They kind of grow another little plant (a bit like spider plants) which you can cut off and plant.

My first year at growing - I'm very glad that I've found this thread - may have to ask for advice very soon!

If you want to be harvesting those redcurrants and raspberries get down to your local Poundstretcher and grab some netting and cheap canes. If you don't protect them the birds will have the lot!

redcurrants are a prime ingredient of summer pudding and my Mother made loads of gorgeous redcurrant Jelly every year from hers.

You are not too late to grow some things from seed. Radishes, Beetroot, French beans, Carrots, Spinach and cut and come again mixed salad leaf. You could also sow some Kale, Chard and winter cabbage seeds.

Check out garden centres and boot sales for tomato and other plants which you've still got time to get a harvest from if you get them in quickly.
There. That should give you plenty!

What will you be using the vermiculite for? I've only heard of its use in germinating seeds.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.
