Fair enough - any reasoning behind the move away from dynamic sizing on the email?
Its good for those of us who use gmail/netbooks is all :D

You seem to have some typos in the bottom section. One of them is on the regular weekly email from last week, one is new.

In your FSA Authorisation text you have a space in authorised so it reads "authoris ed" (not in old weekly email, just this online demo).

In the final paragraph you say "It's owned, and run by ultra-specialised journalist and bestselling author Martin Lewis.". You need another comma after run, so it reads: "It's owned, and run, by ultra-specialised ...." (this error is in the regular weekly email too).

Hope this helps. Love the weekly emails, always a good read. New format looks good.

The problem with dynamic sizing is it makes it terribly difficult to lay things out in a clear way as we can't control it - so it gets very ugly and clumsy.

Fixed width is the new standard for things like this - we've checked for gmail compatability (and all standards) and this works in all of them so we should be there :)

  • I like the continuity between the site and the new look but I have to agree that my big bug bare is when there are big gaps on websites and it does look very evidently 'skinny' which I find frustrating for no other reason than it looks like wasted space. We dont like waste on MSE!! ;)

I hope you are not saving side space to stick advertising in as many of the other slimline pages do!!

Thanks for replying - was just being nosey - am currently designing (having designed I should say) a dynamic website and am thinking of going the same way for our newsletter email - interesting that you've had problems - may go back and rethink the idea :)
  • Hi,

It has a much 'cleaner' look to it. I also prefer the larger spacing (even though my eyesight is spot on).

Noticed that last weeks e-mail gave five big opportunities to sign up for the e-mails on a regular basis
(for those, I suppose, who come across this for the first time on the MSE site)

    Five times is too many....but....

one tiny mention at the end, in a green 'footer' is surely too few!

Remember this is an email though not for a website. Many people view them either in the preview pain of their email browser or not in a fully opened window. It's actually wider than most emails and wider than the text we do on the main site :)
I'm not quite sure I understand that! Don't most people read emails in (almost?) their normal screen width, just like they do for a browser? The width of the sample new email newsletter looks like (about) 600 pixels, whereas almost nobody has a screen narrower that 1024, nowadays.

Certainly much clearer to read, though!
