Dell Inspiron 6000 - recover data

i;ve seen this done without removing the HDD but sadly I was busy and didn't watch carefully...the guy loaded a Linux OS off a flash drive and used that to search the HDD for files..and he seemed to be happy with what he got. Wish I'd not been so busy now, handy thing to know.
Maybe an online search could find this method?

So why does a repair reformat the drive, thought only a fresh install would do that?
I have tried this on several XP machines at my office in the past. Sometimes you get the option to repair an installation and sometimes you don't, I haven't been able to work out why. But if you don't get the option to repair an installation and just go ahead anyway, the drive will be formatted and I'm afraid it is likely that all data will be lost.0
