Dell Inspiron 6000 - recover data

The laptop would not boot, so the user put in a XP disk and recovered from that, but now all their files have gone. The laptop now boots up fine. They did not use ctrl+f11 to recover.
Is it possible to recover any of the data, as they have pics which they would like save. I assume the data is still there but not visible, without using the relevant software.

Tried recuva with no luck. Why did the XP repair overwrite all the docs and not just the OS?
Any other possible solutions?0 -
I've used progs in the past to recover data from failed & formatted drives but they're all paid versions. Try Getdataback from Runtime Software, its never failed me yet

As for the why, if they re-installed the o/s it will format the drive...0 -
Thanks will give this a try.0

So why does a repair reformat the drive, thought only a fresh install would do that?0

God knows, i've given up trying to find a logical reason for anything micro$oft does... Good luck tho

repair doesn't format the drive.!!

If they did in fact perform a repair installation rather than a full format and reinstall, their old documents might just be in a different location to what they expected.
Go to Start→My Computer, open Local Disk (C:) and take a look inside the Documents and Settings directory. Aside from the All Users folder, what do you see?0 -
Cant see any old files under Documents and Settings directory, just 3 new empty ones. Looks like not a repair but a fresh install.
Does this mean I'm wasting my time trying to recover some pics?
To recover files using Getdataback I need to connect this 2.5" IDE laptop drive either to my desktop, which has a spare slave IDE slot or via its PCI SATA card, or my laptop via USB.
Anyone recommend or point me to suitable adapters?0 -
Either of these should do:Anyone recommend or point me to suitable adapters?0
