How about using plastic cable ties. The theives would then have to use scissors or a knife to cut them down. This would probably stop the opportunist theif!

We use cable ties to tie them to the brackets, the first time my mum did them they were stolen the 2nd lot we tied down and have repeated the operationf or the last few years, its jsut a pain getting them down afterwards.

    Thanks for all the ideas!

My Dad bought me some cable ties and we have tried them today along with some wire too - I defy them to pinch the remaining three now! Just gutted that I will now have to buy a new basket and do another one now.

    Thanks again everyone!!! :-)

How about attaching it to the 240V mains?? That way they'll get a nasty shock (literally) :D

Hang them on the inside of your house :)

Hang them in your back garden, hopefully it's more secure.

We always have a good basket on front of our house, touch wood we haven't had it nicked despite riff raff that walks along in the hours of darkness and loves to damage cars, rip plants out of planters that council provide.

I do however, tire the basket with steel green garden wire (its quite strong thick wire) through the hanging basket chains onto the bracket. It may prevent the quick grabbiit riff raff but not the determined low life.

I did have a large plastic container with a very large conifer nicked a few years back, it took some shifting.

Wrap gaffer tape (the silver stuff) all round the hook and where it is hanging from. They will have to have a stanley knife with them to get that off.

OH said this came up at our local gardening club last night.
Best solution was to put a jubilee clip round the chains and the suspension bracket.
