Big name tyres are so cheap from mytyres.co.uk that I use them. Works out at £42 per wheel for top rated performance tyres for me.

A lot of people falling for the "more expensive is better" rubbish on this thread.

"budget tyres give less grip and don't last as long" - utter rubbish. The compound hardness is stamped on the tyre. The softer the compound the shorter the life , but grip should be better. Tread patterns are often the same on budget brands as premium brands ( my cars cheap Corsa tyres have identical tread pattern to the Michelins on the rear )

In the annual tyre surveys its always budget tyres that come out top. As already stated, most big brands also have a budget brand that is often a much better bet than the premium brand.
Buying a tyre is pot luck unless you can find the exact type from a review. Tyre patterns and compounds change regularly, so (for example) although your previous Continentals were excellent and long lasting , this years equivalent could be now only last half as long ( if they change to a softer compound )
Maloya did well in last years auto express tyre survey. They are Vredstein's budget brand.

Kumho are a cheaper brand of tyre and are a good buy for most drivers.

My opinion about budget tyres comes from experience of driving on them, not from reading some review. Bad tyres can completely ruin the handling of a car, particularly in the wet. It doesn't necessarily follow that tyres will last well if they grip badly or vice versa- a good tyre will do both well and a bad one will do both badly.

I wasn't suggesting that everybody should rush out and buy top of the range tyres, just that the very cheapest tyres aren't usually much good. It's also possible for branded tyres to be cheaper than budget ones- in the same way thatI have always found that the extra 20% or so on the price of branded tyres gave me more than 20% more miles coupled with better grip, especially in the wet. I'm not sure that Corsa are budget tyres anyway, I always thought they were sort of in between.

Taking Auto Express's advice on motoring matters is like taking Simon Cowell's advice on music.
  • I am not adding to the cheap/expensive tyre debate as I think that is personal choice.

I however would like to point out that after researching various tyre suppliers I was able to save alot of money on my tyres by printing out the etyres.co.uk quote and taking it to Kwik Fit where they agreed to match it! Then, when I paid they had actually charged me 5% less than etyres!!!!!

Plus, very good service and the reassurance of being able to go back if I have any problems.

Some budget tyres are OK, some are rubbish, generally in their wet weather handling. However, when you can buy performance tyres like Goodyear F1s for £34 (mytyres.net) then there's no need to even bother arguing about budget tyres.

  • My golden rule for economy tyres is "buy budget - buy twice".

They are called economy for a reason.

I always prefer to pay a little extra and get a proper brand rather than whatever a garage has to hand. I value my safety too much.

Bridgestone are a good make of tyre but next time if you want something cheaper look to pick up Firestone which is its slightly cheaper sibling but still a decent quality of tyre.

just for clarity - Firestone is the US brand name of Bridgestone :)
