If it's just for back-up, I'd go for the O2 dongle and a Virgin SIM, 30p a day (up to 25 MB) or maybe a 3 SIM, 150 MB allowance for a top-up every 3 months0

The cheapest dongle i can find is £19.99...does anyone know of any cheaper...preferably instore, but online if needs be. I'm on 3 at the mo, but there's something wrong with it, it won't let me sign into certain sites (like FB, Googlemail and Ebay), so i just need a replacement, not an actual deal.0

If you have an unlocked dongle and have a good signal on 3 you can use a 3 SIM in a phone to buy a day's Internet for 50p which lasts 2 days. Then transfer the SIM to the dongle and enjoy.
YMMV0 -
25MB isn't going to last very long - that tariff is designed for WAP browsing on a phone.0

Yes, £2 for that day. So if you used it every month for a year, that would be £24. In that case Vodafone would be comparable value, as long as you didn't go over it's 1GB limit over the year.
You would have 6 GB with O2 using your scenario, plus 12 days of outside WiFi access.
Six of one and half a dozen of another, as they say.
nice one that's sounding like the sort of thing0 -
Just to add my twopenneths worth to this.
I have had "3" in Austria for the last two years, on a contract with 15Gb traffic a month. The monthly fee I paid was cheaper than that of the equivalent fee for the same product in the UK - however the really cool thing is this: I could use my "3" dongle in the UK without any "Roaming" costs.
Incredible, but if you signed up in Austria for "3" for 2 years, you could use the whole thing cheaper than the equivalent deal in the UK and the dongle would work in the UK too for no extra cost.0
