Thanks for your tips, I reckon it must be something like the thermostat as I looked up the model no. on google and there was a review website slating the model for doing that!!! There is nothing working on the fridge at all apart from the light.

A friend of a friend is a commercial refridgeration engineer so I'm hoping he's gonna pop in and have a look tonight if he's got time. Eitherwise I'm gonna have to pay hotpoint £90 for the privilege of them looking at it!! grrrrr What a con!

Is it right that thermostats are only about £20 and how expensive is expensive for compressors Cagey??

Thermostat should be no dearer than £20. a compressor is more likely to be nearer £100 & you would require a refridgeration engineer to change it as the gas would have to be removed & then recharged after the new compressor fitted.
The thermostat is the most likely problem but is it worth buying a new one just to find out.

Hooray, I've had it fixed. It was the thermostat (part cost £14). A friend of a friend fixed it for me (finally). It makes you realise what a rip-off Hotpoint are if they wanted to charge me £90 labour. It took no more than half an hour and the lovely bloke only took a tenner off me (sweetheart he was).:T

He did say that he hates working on domestic fridges though and not to recommend him to anyone else though LOL!!

    Thanks everyone for their help
