The link I posted doesn't recommend it as you will lose power steering and it might activate the steering lock
You won't lose power steering immediately ... it slowly fades as pressure is gradually lost.
Even if you lose power assistance, you still have steering.

The steering lock only activates if you activate it. Surely you know how the ignition switch works don't you? Which position the steering is locked in, which position it isn't etc.

Ok thanks - so even if the accelerator is down it won't accelerate in manual?
You think the car will accelerate even if it's not in gear?

also I tried moving down gears hoping that might slow it down even though you shouldn't be putting the clutch down when the accelerator is down - can this damage the car?
Well the engine will hit the rev limiter if you don't switch it off, which is not a good idea generally, but if it's that option or hitting a wall or a person, it's probably best to allow the rev limiter to function.

Try contacting this organisation for more help & advice; it really sounds like you need some.

OK thanks - yes it does seem like a stupid question now
  • I'm sure that you would be "boo hoo'ing" too, If you were stuck in an accelerating vehicle which you were struggling to control.

    Yet another insightful post .

On a side note I have always been of the opinion that floor mats on the drivers side cause more harm than good.
War does not decide who is right, It decides who is left.
  • the mat on my focus sometimes works free of the toggle clips on the main carpet and works its way under the accelerator pedal causing the pedal to stick. either remove the mat or cut the mat to suit, so it cant jam the pedal on. 2 minutes with a stanley knife will have it sorted.
    ...work permit granted!
