Is there any reason why I can't feed my cat on sardines forever?

Not exactly a good comparsion imo with the cornflakes

Anyway all I was saying was that Pip was perfectly fine on dry cat biscuits and never had any health issues

    Thats all

The reason I used corn flakes is that the primary ingredient in many dry cat foods is maize (corn) so IMHO it is a very apt comparison.

  • Our cats used to have canned fish 2-3 times a week, sardines or tuna. The rest of the time they had felix or similar canned stuff twice a day, with dry food left down all the time for them to pick at. One lost a lot of his teeth as an adult and had to have some treatment for them, the other kept all his teeth and had no health problems and lived 3 years longer than his brother. They both had the same diet and lived a long and happy life. I met a lady who had a black cat who looked very similar to mine but his cat shone line a mirror. She said she fed him on mostly tuna with occasional hi life. I have never seen a cat in such lovely condition, and he had no teeth problems either.

only ever had two cats - the first was fed canned cat food - but he was outdoor cat and judging by the 'gifts' he left for supplemented his diet with raw food. oh - and you couldnt leave raw meat out as he would help himself.
the other cat had feline aids and i rescued him from street. he also had very poor teeth - as in - not many left. vet recommended wet food only. er - cat had his own ideas. he loved chicken chow mein from takeaway - but had to be in foil dish not his own. a tin of salmon went down well - tuna - ok but would leave half - aldis tinned cat food - apparently that was yeuchhh - aldis pouched cat food - acceptable - asda pouch food - yeuchh - whiskas pouch food - oh gawd yessssssssssssssss but only if it wasnt chunked! I am talking about a cat who had a 'thing' for insence sticks - i burned one everyday for him (frankinsense his fave) and he would sit there with the smoke going up his nose and an expression of bliss on his face. wierd cat! loved him tho he was so gentle and kind and so loving!!!

Timmers - when I placed my 2nd order after receiving the sample pack I put a note in the comments box about the £10 as I didn't see it either. I placed my order and the money was taken in full but another transaction appeared same day on my credit card statement showing £10 refund. I worked out roughly how much I need for a month for my 4 and just placed another order to be delivered Tues. As far as I'm concerned it's excellent value, I feel I'm doing the best for my cats but everyone's circumstances are different. I think we all just need to read up and make the choices that we think are best!

I think everyone is just becoming far too obsessed! Cats have lived long and healthy lives for centuries, surviving on whatever has been available at the time (commercially) plus scraps and wild caught prey!

There's no evidence to say that cats are living any longer or healthier lives since the introduction of all these new fad diets. Companies just pander to owners' needs ;)

If Noah was expected to live on scraps and wild prey he wouldn't survive long, he is indoor only and I eat a lot of vegetarian meals!! :p By my calculations it's cheaper to feed ready-made raw than commercial food, and my cat loves it so it's a no-brainer really.

    Is he FIV+ then?

I was also talking about commercial food (Kitekat) which first became available in the 1930s ;)

I've not met anybody who has fed their cat a purely raw diet over a number of years so couldn't possibly say whether long term it's any better for them than feeding a commercial diet. If he enjoys it and it's not causing any adverse effects to his health then go for it! :D

Noah has (had) pododermatitis when he was a stray - so severe his paws got very infected and he was in the vets for five weeks. He appears to have been left with residual sensitivity so the vet advised indoors only/ no rough surfaces: he was tested for FIV as there is some link with pododermatitis but is negative.

As I live in a city centre flat - no other pets and no kids, Noah doesn't like them - CP offered him to me! :T I originally expected to adopt an FIV or deaf cat as I wouldn't feel comfortable keeping a healthy cat inside for my benefit. It's too early to say how the raw diet will affect his health, other than his poos are improved. There are a few (sensible) raw feeders over on Purrs forums who have encouraged me - the problem with a lot of raw websites is they make very unscientific claims, the testimonials are VERY American!!

    Excellent, well done you!! :T

We could do with a few more people like you willing to adopt cats like Noah :A

Well I know you've thoroughly done your research :p so good luck to both you and Noah, seems he landed on his feet (no pun intended ;) ) when he met you :D
