Is there any reason why I can't feed my cat on sardines forever?

  • FF...the more I read, the more convinced I am that Noah was really meant to find you!! It seems like he is making his way to a very natural raw meat diet....and I really hope this holds the key to getting rid of all his itches and inflammations.
    Now...pictures!

Thanks! :o Only a couple of weeks ago I said I wasn't going to do all raw, but Noah just loves it ... I've a fair bit of 'normal' cat food to use up mind.

Parents are now back in the country which means I have a second pair of hands to photo while I Dragonfly AND I have my dad to show me how to do technical stuff like uploading. :T

My cats love them too..even in tomato sauce

The only thing that I think may be dodgy is the oil? Fish is fine for cats , but the same thing contantly would worry me a little too....vet is best, or even the online vet here may be helpful /

Have you seen this place? http://food4-cats.co.uk they are pretty cheap and it's real meat they sell. I cooked it a little for mine...they aren't used to raw meats for main meals, but it's cheap compared to tins and sachets.

Yes they do charge 6 quid postage.
They also refund the first ten quid spent when you order again.

You need to buy in bulk really, a couple of weeks at least I think for me with 3 cats, longer for less cats.

A 48 sachet pack of Felix is 10 quid at Morrisons ...on offer. That's 100g a sachet just under 5 kg in wieght and lots of filler and jelly.

5kg of raw minced beef and kidney costs £7.50 at F4C ...and no carrying it or much waste....add postage and that is 13.50 which isn't short of the retail price of the 48 pack and it fills the cats up much better with no waste as they eat it all. If you were to buy the 12 packs of most foods in sachets that are 3.50 or so each x 4 = 14 quid anyway.

I hate searching for decent prices cat food and all the time knowing that it's such a low % of real goodness ...that's no problem as long as they enjoy the raw stuff (which I lightly cook to make a gravy anyway)..the price is fixed, the food is visibly meat in large %, and I don't have to go find it and carry it.

Dry cat biccies with vitamins top up any extra needs they may have.

One thing I noticed with this raw food...I eat alone now. On sachets whenever I ate I had an audience hoping for a share, that no longer happens.

I just have to try and figure how to get the 10 quid refund from food4cats...they don't mention it on their site of in the cart...

The £10 sample pack is 3.2kg, and the price includes delivery: the £10 is refundable against your next order. Thereafter it's just 60p for 400g of solid meat, equivalent to two large tins or eight pouches of good quality (50% meat) cat food, plus delivery charge. As long as you order a month of meat at a time it's still cheaper to feed the ready made raw than good quality pouches!

Why is it amazing for a cat to get fed raw meat? That's exactly what they would eat if they caught a bird or mouse! I find it more amazing that most of the dry cat food you can buy in supermarkets is essentially a box of flavoured breakfast cereal: just 4% real meat.

My Grandma and my aunt both smoked for many years, my Grandma died in her early eighties and my aunt is still alive in her seventies. That doesn't prove it's healthy to smoke cigarettes! :p In fitness we describe clients who don't have a diagnosed medical condition "apparently healthy" as we recognise that you don't go from healthy to unwell overnight.

I mearly meant that I think some cats are totally spoiled, OP was saying she cant afford the meat therefore I see no reason why said cat cant have dry food with occasional pouch?

Why is it spoiling a cat to feed it's natural diet instead of a bowl of corn flakes? Is it spoiling your child to give them a homecooked meal rather than a bag of crisps? There is evidence that an low quality dry diet increases the risk of a cat getting diabetes, obesity, renal (kidney) failure and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. These conditions can cost thousands of pounds in veterinary care.

As I said, it's actually cheaper per portion to feed a ready-made raw diet than either the sardines or many wet and dry cat foods. :money: Food4Cats is £1.50 per kilo plus delivery charge, Whiskas pouches £2.90 per kilo for a multipack, Go Cat dry biscuits £2.30 per kilo for a large bag. I consider the Food4Cats very MSE as it's 100% meat so you need to feed less, the Whiskas and Go Cat contain just 4% meat.

Not exactly a good comparsion imo with the cornflakes

Anyway all I was saying was that Pip was perfectly fine on dry cat biscuits and never had any health issues

    Thats all
