pressurised selling

My H popped into a dealership yesterday and ultimately put a deposit on a car as the salemans did his usual you'll never find it better priced and ive got someone coming looking at it in a couple of days who wants it etc

However lat night when he came home he found out it wasn't such a good deal and feels like hes been had.

I spoke to the manager who has basically said that he should have done his homework before buying (which I know is factually true) but didn't mention anything about the deposit if we cancelled, I said we needed time to think.

Is there anything we can do about the deposit?

Yes, don't allow OH to go into places that sell cars on his own, with money in his pocket.

If you no longer want the car, perhaps the dealer will be kind enough to forget the deal in exchange for the deposit left.

No wonder most dealers now insist on a deposit being left. There once was a time when a gentleman's handshake meant there was no going back on a deal. :(

I am assuming it is a second hand car ??
If so it depends why you don't want it, if there is nothing wrong with the car I cant see you getting the deposit back if you cancel (unless you chose another car from the same dealer)
If its just because he has seen a cheaper one elsewhere then thats not the garages fault or problem. but remember that the other one may not be the same quality ect.
If he was happy with the car and the price he was asked for before (he must have been to leave the deposit) then I would say go ahead with the sale. I paid more for my car than I could have got one for but 6 years on I still have it and it is still perfect. Cheaper is not always better, normally cars are cheaper for a reason.

Not when the buyer approaches the seller on the seller's premises.

The other car on the other deal could be a cloned model well under priced or something.

Maybe its going to fail an MOT or has outstanding finance and the sellers want to do someone over.

Have you check parkers.co.uk for prices to see what the car valuation services think this current car deal is worth? It might not be bad afterall?

Yep you are totally right, most dubious car sellers thrive on this fact. They will allow you to spend as much time as you want glossing over the cars, but once you approach one of their staff, (not the other way round), you are well and trully on these !!!!!! menu:mad::mad::mad:

they may be "!!!!!!" and I dont have much time for car salesmen in general BUT No one can phsically force anyone to hand over a deposit. The amount of times someone comes on here and says I/we/my OH etc has handed over a deposit (because we didnt want anyone else to buy the car) and then say we have changed our minds is untrue. The dealer may have lost a proper sale in that period of time.

    Oh my GOD,
No, of course they cannot physically force anyone to hand over a deposit but they are trained and well versed in ways to ensure that the punter has little ground to stand on when things go tits up.

They use any method available, mental suborbination is easily acheived:rolleyes:

The worst that can happen is you'll lose your deposit, but you may even get it back if you ask them very nicely and are civil with them. What car was it exactly? Mileage price etc? Then maybe we can see if you've been 'had' too badly! Good luck.

sorry how has he 'been had' he looked at the car obviously liked it and paid a deposit, the only one that has been had is the dealer,as he now has another whingieng whining time waster to deal with and may have lost a sale elsewhere,

deposit, well if you throw yourselves at his mercy he may refund,BUT, he does not have to,I wouldnt.

the dealer would have a case for suing you for the rest
