Seems you don't even get that!
Just to test it out, i put in a tracking number from an itemi posted a few weeks ago (that i know has been received) and it's saying the same thing as the Netherlands item:

"Your item, posted on 27/09/08 with reference LY00******GB has been passed to the overseas postal service for delivery in EIRE".

There's no proof at all, that the person has received it.
Doubt if i'll be using Airsure again, as it seems packages aren't being tracked.
If this went to a Paypal "item not received" dispute, i wouldn't have a leg to stand on!

the problem is witrh any international RM item you are relying on the receiving countries postal service to provide an update on tracking

I don't trust overseas tracking so I decided a couple of years ago to only sell items up to £39 overseas that way I am covered on a straight COP and my postage looks really cheap as well.

But what if you list something, expecting it to end at less than £39 and it sells for say £60. What do you do then?

I don't do buy-it-nows (i do regular auctions) - so this happens a lot with me.

That has happened a couple of times but I tend to know roughly how much my stuff will fetch. If I think I might hit the £39 mark I just limit myself to UK sales, if I under estimate and it goes a bit over I still tend to use normal airmail and should it get lost I'll just claim the £39 back. As I also limit myself on weight this means i never have to pay huge airmail postage bills, so for instance a 299 g book to Germany would cost £2.44 airmail, if I had to upgrade to airsure with additional insurance it would be £9.14 which makes it too expensive.

But surely this is a "rip-off" then, because we (the customer) assume that we're paying for a 'Fast, secure and reliable' service (which i might add, charges an additional £4.50!).

Maybe Royal Mail needs to let customers know that this is NOT a reliable service after all!

NO but you would assume if RM are offering a service they would check it could actually do what they state. So they would check the quality of the service in the other countries

and the fact RM offer it to limited countries will be that reason
however they cannot make a postal provider track an item
RM themselves dont track every item

Obviously i know it won't be a UK postie delivering the package overseas.

    You're missing my point here.

What exactly are Royal Mail charging the customer an extra £4.50 for?!!!!

its handled in the UK as a special delivery
it is travels out of the UK and is passed to the other carrier as a priority item requiring a signature on delivery
the exact same as when the reverse occurs on incoming priority items to the UK where these items enter the mailstream and are handled as SD items to delivery
