Surely the value of these warranties depends on the machine value you are protecting. For the £129 Dell machines being sold by BT I wouldn't bother - take regular backups and if it breaks fix it yourself or chuck it.
If however this £76 for a three year at home warranty was on a £600-£700 machine and also included the monitor and peripherals then I'd say it was a very good price.
Q - Was this warranty just for one specific piece of equipment, and what was the value of the item being protected?

erm, no. please don't 'chuck it'. that's why we have waste heaps the size of football pitches.
fix it, get someone to fix it for you or recycle it.

    Be VERY careful:

At the begining of May, I started getting very persistent calls from a chap called Jason who said he worked for Dell and was offering me a 3 year next day onsite International warranty - for the Inspiron 1300 that I had just purchased - for £77.50. The three years would start at the point I signed up.

To cut a long story short, after a few phone calls, I knocked him down to £65 and agreed to buy it. Before I would buy, I made him email me a copy of the agreement, so that I could see what I was buying and to ensure that I was dealing with Dell.

The T&C's did indeed turn up, Jason called me back, I agreed to buy for £65 and I was then transferred to "Kerry" at Dellcare - who took down the Visa details etc and confirmed the sale at £65.

Kerry told me that I would receive the paperwork within 5 days.

Guess what? You guessed it, no paperwork turned up - so I started to chase "Jason" who I now realised was actually Dave Adams, a Sales Team leader for Dellcare Glasgow - who in reality is a company called Bellcom who specialise in "Contact Centre Delivery and Outbound Campaign Management" - in other words, they just call people up and sell stuff for whoever pays them that week.

As a result of contacting Dave/Jason, I do now have the paperwork for my 3 year warranty and yes, you guessed it, my Visa now shows a charge for £77.50......

I am sure that it's just a mistake - not deliberate, and that I'll easily get it sorted out ;)

Simply demand that your credit card company do a chargeback, then write to Watchdog and the Dell CEO to complain about their blatant fraud.
You don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.

Sorry when I said chuck it that meant get rid of it - usually I pass them down to someone else, or if it's unfixable it goes in the scrap metal bin at our local tip (Cherwell District Council is very big on recycling!)

The same happened to me but I got my paperwork a few days later.

I don't get what's the difference between them contacting you or Dell? They both mention what spec machine you have and go through the same details?

I just thought I'd add my own thoughts to the "Dellcare" story.

I've got a Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop and just out of the 12 month warranty it broke. I found out that this was due to a manufacturing defect which Dell had started to correct on newer machines. It took a few strongly worded legal letters quoting from the Sale of Gods Act and referring to "inherant defects" but in the end Dell fixed the laptop free of charge.

So when about six months later I got a call from Dellcare offering me a 3 year warranty starting from that point and not from the laptop purchase date, I was quite interested. At first I thought it was Dell themselves that were calling me because they had my telephone number and they knew the exact model that I had. I then picked up on the Dell*care* thing and I aske if they were actually Dell. They said that they were affiliated to Dell.

I knew that my details must have come from Dell but I was worried that it might have been some ex-Dell employee who had left the company, taking their customer records with him. So I phoned Dell's head office in Bracknell and before long I was talking to someone in India :rotfl: They confirmed that Dellcare was affiliated but asked me how much Dellcare had quoted me for the warranty and promptly undercut the Dellcare quote by 5%. I was much happier dealing with Dell directly so I bought the cover from them.

I had 1 of these Dell 'care' people contact me (I bought a Dell laptop about 3 months ago) and I thought they seemed a bit 'dodgey'...
How much did you pay in the end from Dell? Do you have contact details? :j

I paid £152 inc for 3 years. The laptop was about 15 months old at the time and the warranty started from that point, not from when I bought the machine.

The guy I dealt with was:- Vikram_T_Reddy@Dell.com
