Anyone have seahorses ?

I would love to keep seahorses, but would appreciate some advice regarding them. We don't currently have any fish, but have kept tropical fish in the past.

Does anyone have them ?

We looked into keping them, they are not the easiest of marine creatures to keep so are in the experienced keeper category.
They do not like strong(ish) currents and need trailing seaweed or coral to grasp with their prehensile tails.
Water quality needs to be top notch and when they have babies they have poggin hundreds which are really difficult to keep as they need a constant supply of rotifers.
Seahorses are difficult to adapt to eating non-live food, and so a good supply of live baby brine shrimp should be maintained.

Good luck, it is not going to be such an easy task, but if you get the set-up right, it will be stunning :)

  • Yes, we wanted seahorses, saying that i went through a phase where i really wanted one of those blacked out tanks and keep jellyfish but they are very tough to look after. They are tough to keep but must be amazing once set up. I love those type of creatures, very fascinating!

I had them when I was little and they were very very hard to look after, I think they actually starved themselves :( Very sad beautiful but hardwork.

There are lots of colourful and very interesting to watch marine fish that are a lot easier to look after, sea horses are beautiful but quite a challenge

Is it possible to get an automatic feeder for marine fish so that they would be OK to leave for two weeks, or is keeping fish totally out if you need someone to feed them for you if you are away

Go and find a reputable fish shop (not the fried kind!) that sells seahorses and ask these questions there.

I was advised by my local shop that our fish should be left unfed while we were on holiday as they would be fine - I never knew that before.
