Who does the best value sushi at lunchtime?

I'm going to start eating more sushi for lunch - not very MSE, but I am trying to lose weight and it is tasty, filling and low in calories!

I have an M&S, Tesco and Boots near work - does anyone buy their luchtime sushi from any of these and is it tasty/good value for money? I have searched their websites but no luck.

Thanks.

  • Hi,

  • I find the Tesco one to be pretty poor. The grains of rice are quite hard and not as sticky as you'd expect.
You could try making your own. From Tesco (cheaper from an Asian/ Chinese supermarket) It's less than £3 for a 500g bag of sushi rice and some nori. Cook as per instructions, add some cheap smoked salmon, cucumber, pepper etc and you have more than enough sushi for a week for about £5. If you like the ginger and wasabi, a jar is under £2 and lasts for ages.

I used to make this for my kids' packed lunches and used 250g rice at a time. There was enough for 3 hearty lunches and some leftover.

    It's only a game

I like the Boots ones, they have a few varieties I think but all nice and some, if not all, are included in their meal deal :)

Thanks for this tip. I did think of doing this but I like variety and I wouldn't make proper sushi myself as I would get food poisoning! :rotfl: I love the raw salmon nigiri, yum yum!

What about M&S, is theirs expensive?

I'll give Boots a go today and maybe M&S tomorrow, will give the Tesco one a miss. Thanks again. Anyone else who has any advice, please feel free! :D

I am from Japan and would say M&S one( £1.00) is best I can get from here.
I did not like expensive one. You can just buy two of these to fill up and maybe with some fruits/some healthy side dishes? All I like sushi from M&S is rice is soft enough.
  • I second having a go at making it! I've made it and it was alot easier than I expected. You boil the rice without stiring for so long, then turn the heat off and leave to stand for so long. make up the glaze from mirin, rice vinigar, salt and sugar then fold through the rice. I think it was £6-7 for all the ingredients and it makes quite alot. I mainly kept to carrot/cucumber/pepper for fillings, but have done some tuna mayo ones. However if you are buying, M&S or Asda are the better ones in my opinion.

The boots one tasted old and stale, the sainsburys one lacked flavour, the asda was awful by far the loveliest but then again you get what you pay for because it was the most expensive by far was the M&S one, now that is to die for:j

I found the M&S one pretty dire tbh, it was bland and tasteless.
