I do believe that if you are going to kill an animal you should use everything. We used to, but unfortunately, although I believe that, I can't eat offal - It is a case of logic and disgust at odds. Don't we all know that everything goes into a sausage.

I agree with you, patchwork cat - but keep in mind that if you are a veggie, and dig out a carrot from your allotment, you cannot use all of it either, as you are going to discard some parts of it before you eat it. I have not seen the programme this thread is about as I live abroad, and throughout my life I have mostly lived in countries or areas where ready meals are simply not available, so it's either cook or live on sandwiches. The rule in our family is that things vegetable that you cannot eat (peelings and other scraps) go on the compost heap and things animal that nobody can eat - including the cats - go to 'the end of the field' as we call it here so that wildlife like badgers and foxes get some nutrition out of it.

  • Once years ago got some cow hide in Iceland frozen mince, it was a Friesian. Haven't bought mince there since. Didn't really buy mince from there as a norm I used to use Dewhursts -does anyone know/remember them. We had a very good one - their shin was excellent.

Tbh its not rocket science that cheapfood isnt going to have the best ingrediants , when you take into account the costs of producing the item and then factor in some profit there isnt a lot left to spend on ingrediants for the £1 Iceland lasagne . I find it very strange that people are willing to sacrifice what they spend on food before anything else .

Let's face it, if you've got a Shop Bought Frozen Lasagne in the freezer that's all you can have to eat.

On the other hand, if you've got 1lb of frozen/fresh minced beef - you can CHOOSE what to make it into AND make it to suit your own, or your family's, tastes .

We watched an episode and we appalled with what is allowed to be used as meat and approved by the FSA, I am now looking at food labels a bit more closely

another good programme on at the moment is Jimmy's Food Factory - it's on tonight at 8pm (I think)

he looks at how lots of processed foods are made - but he does it in a non judgemental way. he just explains (and tries to recreate) the food, but doesn't lecture about what we should or shouldn't eat.

That's very true, but sadly there are too many people in this country who wouldn't know what to do with a LB of mince.
