I agree Foggy - use all the animal and make sure it had a good life and as humane a death as possible.
I'm all for eating offal etc but disagree with pretending it's something it's not
  • I agree we should eat 'good' meat, however it's easier said than done, isn't it?

I was served a beef heart once and thought it was roast beef ...tasted fine and was lean meat.

You think that's bad...you don't want to know what gets into chicken soup :rotfl:
I went round a factory making packet chicken soup once...never eaten it since.

The average person eats an astonishing amount of insects in theor food in a year I once read...and they don't come in meat so even veggies aren't as safe as they may think ;)

I've just made pork stock from the bones and trim that were included in my 'half a pig' freezer pack. The tail went in as well. I roasted it all first before making the stock. Smells delicious and will be chock full of nutrients.

    Is that 'gross' or thrifty?

I've still got the trotters to deal with.

I haven't seen the programme but it sounds like they were using all the meat from an animal. I really can't see what the problem is with that. A nice piece of steak is a cow's bum after all. Why should one bit of an animal be OK to eat and another not OK?
  • Not gross. Sounds delicious and thrifty. What are you going to do with the stock and can I pop round later, please?

I don't think there's a problem with eating any part of the animal, we often had stuffed heart when I was a child. It wasn't my favourite and I liked the stuffing bit the best, but I would have no objection to eating it because it was heart. There are bits I don't fancy, on the other hand if a good chef cooked them for me and presented the dish to me , I'd certainly be prepared to eat them.

However I want to know what I'm eating and I have no faith and trust in the integrity of most of the manufacturers of cheap (and sometimes not so cheap) foods, which is why I rarely now buy processed meat foods...pies, pates, sausages, burgers etc.

My favourite rule of thumb for buying food is "the fewer ingredients in any one item the better".
Better buy flour, fat, meat and onions than a cheap meat pie.

There is nothing wrong with eating every part of the animal , in fact ethically its a good thing . However the truth of the matter is that over processed meat products are made up from meat from animals that have been raised in less then ideal conditions , and possibly processed in a dubious manner ( we import a huge % of our meat , from countries who have suspect meat rearing / processing policies ) .

Quite :T and that is my reason for not buying them, that and the fact that I can make far nicer versions at home with as Bronnie says a few simple ingredients.

I saw the programme and I agree with thriftlady. I admit that I would have been grossed out in the past but I found myself thinking that at least they were making full use of the animal that had died to feed us. I watched another programme showing that so much meat has to be thrown away because consumers demand fillets and other prime cuts but and won't buy others.

I'd be put off products with chemical preservatives, stabilisers etc, but not by "yukky" bits of animal if it tasted nice. That said, I'm trying to eat more vegetarian food for several reasons.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
