..that sort of thing is one of the reasons I am vegetarian:D

This kind of thing is the only reason Im veggie and I hate readymeals and their ilk...the thought of all the processing that goes on with food today is enough to make my head swim :lipsrseal blugh. I thought this programme was good, why isnt it shown primetime though?

I literally couldn't survive without ready meals. I do batch cook but if I don't have the energy to prepare a meal then we don't eat. Now, starving toddler or ready meal, let me think...

but there are ready meals that are acceptable and ready meals that are definitely not

For me the issue was the degree to which they were misleading the consumer.

As a consumer, I would expect a beef burger to contain almost entirely beef, and I would probably expect it to be from stewing cuts like fore. I would not expect to find it padded out with offal, fat, connective tissue and chemicals. I don't have an issue with any of those (and would eat them in other contexts), its just not what I think they represent a burger to be.

The chicken kiev and hot dog were more of an issue in that respect for me though. If you can use 10% chicken meat, then add all the skin, crap and connective tissue you like, and be allowed to call that 1) 19% chicken and 2) made from chicken at all - there is something seriously wrong with the FSAs standards IMHO.

Ray Rainer did a programme along similar lines last year looking at how reworking the recipe by mere pence would make them better and healthier.

At the end of the day though, those who have to resort to the value meat ranges are those who have little other choice, and they should be better protected by the law.

My two-penneth, though I'm sure not everyone will agree :S

ive not seen this particular programme, but have seen similar such as what jamie oliver and richard hammond have done and am now wary of buying proccesd food, especially things like economy sausages, pies and frankfurters. id much rather try to buy the raw ingredients and cook it from scratch or buy 'better quality' ie higher percentage meat sausages.
although i must admit having ready meas are a good idea, as thyre handy to have it the case of bieng sensible about it.
  • And I have to say, I think I would draw the line at some of the stuff here

Oh, love chicken feet salad, it's lovely when you spice it with lime juice, palm sugar, some chillies and crisp lettuce. Shredded green papaya goes well too.

Pig intestines are nice stewed with soya sauce and spices.

That's one of my favorite dishes, it's got pig ears, intestine and skin. :)

(click on the links for food as not everyone will want to see them!)
But I'm guessing they won't go down too well if you serve them up for dinner.

  • I do believe that if you are going to kill an animal you should use everything. We used to, but unfortunately, although I believe that, I can't eat offal - It is a case of logic and disgust at odds. Don't we all know that everything goes into a sausage.

Tbh you only have to watch the ads for Iceland . 'Great food for a great price ? ' Yep a meal for £1 .wonder how much the ingrediants cost in that Lasagne they show?

I thought that, the ad was on tbv the other night.

    A 450g of mince is £3.20 (I think).

Even if they use 1/4 of that, how can they make it so cheap:confused:

One reason is because they don't buy their own mince in their own shops to make the Lasagne. It may cost us £3.20 for 450g of mince in their shop, but they will order 100 tons at a time, to be delivered over a year in equal monthly loads. And they won't order the good stuff, they'll go for the half meat half cr*p stuff as once it's cooked you can't tell.

That was disgusting. I think the best way is to eat a little but high quality meat. If you like it of course....

My friends often comment at my snootiness regarding free range chicken when I claim to be so poor. What they don't understand is I would rather buy a decent chicken for £8 once a fortnight (and stretch it to 3 meals) than buy several packs a week of cheapo chicken breasts like they do.

If my OH wasn't such a meat lover I'd not even eat meat every day.
