HTC Hero - can I upgrade it to Android 2.0 Eclair?

Dear all
I'm still on my trusty old Nokia 6310i but finally about to get current(-ish) and planning on an HTC Hero...
I know Android have recently released the new version, Eclair, 2.0.. see

- but will I be able to buy a current Hero & and some point in the not2distant upgrade & get the new function??
And will being able to upgrade depend on the carrier??
Alternatively, any rumours on newer HTC models being released with Eclair pre-installed??
I'd like to be able to buy a lump-of-hardware and live with it for some time, upgrading the Software as improvements come along...(Works for PCs/Laptops... )

They're working on the Android 2.0 upgrade, rumours are it will be out before xmas but it's definately going to be released.
In terms of future models with 2.0 installed I don't know about HTC but the Motorola Droid is being released soon with 2.0 and is getting great reviews.0 -
