Sounds like you were aiming that directly at me and that your taking my comment too personally! Maybe the comment on the flexible connectors thread of "touting for business" made shortly before my comment here didnt help!..though it was only made in jest and not aimed at anyone here ("lol" was the clue ..i like to stir things up a little to keep the tradesmen on their toes and cause a debate to liven up the forum..besides plumbers were ganging up on me and destroyed my arguments!). Still i love the constant DIY vs Trades battle..would be no fun posting otherwise! All the trades thanks each other for defending each other and all the diyer's thank each other for defending each other! Brilliant! :rotfl:

I would not have thought that this was aimed at you at all. From my perspective, your advice is often right and when it isn't, it is only rarely downright dangerous :D

That's the problem with foreigners/cash in hand jobs, you rarely have any come back. Sometimes it worth doing it yourself or paying for a proper job.

This is what happens in a country where tradesmen are seen as trash and not to be trusted whereas "professionals" are above reproach.

If we had proper, high quality apprenticeships and registration schemes then we would turn out quality tradesmen.

as it is,we no longer do have this and things are getting no better. Instead we have crappy NVQs (not very qualified)...and skills assessment centres who never fail anyone becuase failure is bad for business.

Elevate apprenticeships to the same level and respect that we give Uni students then we wont have bunches of gorillas wandering round the place aborting peoples homes.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

    Those who
he had been paid cash in hand,
are taking a risk. It should not come as a big surprise to find that those who do not pay their taxes are crooks and cheats.

Most jobs can be Diy'd around the house, if you have time go to a few evening classes, and read lots of books.
I think now most of the work i do at home is equally as good if not better than getting someone in, but i take a bit longer to do it.

Yes, a lot of people think that.

Most tradesmen learn to be very diplomatic when presented with some dreadful example of the worst DIY imaginable, that was obviously cobbled together using whatever tools and fittings the householder had to hand.

It makes me wonder why I need a van full of thousands of pounds worth of gear when most jobs can be done with a hammer, a bigger hammer and some insulating tape ;)

Ooops...guess i took the flak! Wearing my bullet proof vest today! Just goes to show how forum posts can get ambiguous...including my more dangerous electrical one's! :D

Seems different people view the forum in different ways...hybrid or threaded modes help show who directed what comment at who but when comments vanish it's impossible to tell! I don't usually use either of those modes and quote people instead!
