Daft question - HTC Tattoo - data usage
Just upgraded 2 phone contracts - one was a HTC Hero with "unlimited" internet which is fine but the other one was a cheaper package with minutes and texts only and we were offered, and accepted, an HTC Tattoo.
The 'phone has just been delivered and before activation it suddenly occurred to me that we had no internet bundle at all with it.
Now, the OH whose 'phone this will be has no need of any internet use but I am just worried that the 'phone will automatically download location information, etc.and land us with an unwanted surcharge over the agreed tariff.
Am I dreaming (
) or do I need to cancel the package?
Thanks for any help in sorting out my confusion!

I am thinking of getting the tattoo on an upgrade as well but only if it lets you use wifi without being charged for data as I dont have an internet bundle. I will go into the Orange shop later today to find out.
I would have thought that there is probably a way to switch off the data services on the phone. That way you could use the wifi when at home for free when you wanted to use web based services.0 -
Just been into an Orange shop to query this and was told that orange send you text messages to activate the web settings. If you delete the messages then the Internet settings wont be saved to the phone and will not let you connect to their network.0

I'd go a step further than deleting the text set-up messages and actually go into the phone's menu to find the data settings and delete them all apart from anything relating to wifi.
But anything to do with 3G, Edge, GPRS, HSDPA or any of that cellular data stuff needs to be cleaned so it won't work at all.0 -
Thanks, not too sure about the text message thing as I did not do that with the Hero.
Not activated the phone yet in case it affects returning it so need to find some info on how to disable these services, i.e to make sure you actually can do that opn the Tattoo.0 -
No no - I've used the HTC Tattoo and the HTC Hero.
You need to go into the phone settings, wireless controls then to mobile network and untick mobile data settings (and possibly some other settings).
As long as you don't see a 'H' or a 'G' in the top notification bar of the phone next to the battery you'll be OK.
Deleting text messages doesn't always work - the phone has the settings built into it, once you put your simcard in it will automatically find and install the settings (this doesn't work with all simcards - but it did for my O2 simcard).
Disabling the mobile network is far more important.0 -
Just found the folllowing on the HTC website:
Turning on or off the data connection
If you are not on a fixed data plan, it is recommended that you turn off the 3G, GPRS, or EDGE connection when not in use to save data cost. This also saves battery power.
There are two ways to easily turn on or off the data connection:- Press and hold the POWER button to open the Phone options menu. (Unlock the screen first if it is locked.) From the menu, tap Mobile network.
- Add the Mobile network widget to your Home screen. This widget is an on/off switch that you can tap to quickly turn the data connection on or off.
