Pocket Money - How Much

I last had pocket money at age 15 and used to have to do weekly chores and would earn £4 per week, there were 4 of us aged between 9 and 15 and we had 4 lists which were rotated on a weekly basis which split ALL of the housework including cleaning the oven and bathrooms etc ironing, and even cleaning my dad/stepmums bedroom - believe me we earnt every penny! It used to take us all day on a saturday! We also had to buy all our own clothes with this etc
I believe children should understand the value of money and about earning money (obviously not to the extreme we had it) but appropriate to their age.
My cousins are 8 and 10, they used to be nightmares for getting up in the morning so now they receive 50p per day that they get up for school properly, make their beds and no messing around and keep their rooms clean and tidy. So they get £2.50 per week based on 5 school days, however they know that if they are naughty at the weekends they lose money off their weekly payment. But they do have to buy any comics/mags, sweets and toys out of this and don't get any other little things like this unless it is birthdays or xmas so if they want an expensive toy or game they have to save for it.0 -
My eldest gets £40 a week, he's just turned 18. After reading these posts I think he's ripping me off! lol

i think £3. That's roughly what i got that age, going up to a fiver (which i got till i was 18)
maybe £2 to spend (toys, sweets) and £1 to save, or £1 to spend, £2 to save. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I got £40 a month when I was 14 or 15, but was expected to pay for pretty much everything out of that - phone bills, bus fare if I wanted to go shopping with friends, clothes, CDs etc.
When I was eight I think I got about £2 a week.
Yes I got £40 a month by the time I was this age, but to get that, I had to hoover the sitting room, the dining room and the landing, polish the sitting room, dining room, clean kitchen floor, and clean bathroom (except toilet lol I refused to do the toilet lol)Debt £30,823.48/£44,856.56 ~ 06/02/21 - 31.28% Paid OffMortgage (01/04/09 - 01/07/39)

Pocket money should roughly be in relation to household income and family lifestyle.
My children (8,9) get £3/week. So in theory they could buy themselves a weekly magazine, or save up for larger items, holiday spending etc. They are lucky, I agree but DH and I are lucky too, so we're sharing our luck around and trying not to parent by double standards.
Last week, eldest put her pocket money towards a new Halloween costume. I contributed £5 and our girls paid any remainder; hers cost £8. Some children wouldn't have costumes, some make them (we often do and it's not necessarily cheaper!) and many parents buy them for their kids in addition to pocket money. It's always hard to know what goes on behind closed doors.0 -

Still getting pocket money at 18, your defo getting ripped off lol
My pocket money stopped at 15 when I was working in a sunbed shop on a sunday for 6 hours and earning my own money. Then i got my first proper weekend and evening job in a sports shop when I turned 16.
If he has a job I would stop giving him pocket money, if he don't have a job lower his money you give him and it would encourage him to go find a job.
Be cruel to be kind I say lol :rotfl:0 -
