Perhaps i shouldn't have used the word 'rent' as some people seem really hung up on it. I really just meant cash. Maybe I'm a child, but I still love getting cash in cards. It's always a "Wah HEYYYY!" moment.

Cash gives the recipient choices - some may shop in Asda but others may prefer Waitrose...Some Oasis others Primark. And sometimes, when there are more pressing needs for a family, it's difficult not to think '..I wish they'd just given me the money...'.

Many years ago, my dad gave me a mug bearing the words "Always give people more than they expect to receive". I thought he was having a dig as he wanted me to paint his house and I was wriggling but really it's a good motto to live by in my book - especially when apologising.
Opinion, advice and information are different things. Don't be surprised if you receive all 3 in response. :D

Call me a cynic but if somebody gave me cash and a ''sorry'' I would initially assume someone would be trying to pay me off asserting my rights to obtain more money. I realise no loss has been caused to them but they may think if they are being 'paid off' that they may be legally entitled to more. Any cynic will think you do not get money for nothing and there must be a catch. Plus many people upon getting a weeks rent money back may think ''tight sod could have given us a month/never ending rent reduction'' lol. Buying a new washing machine for the house just looks like you will benefit from it when they move out...lol.

Some nice vouchers for tesco/m&s would surely give them bits free for christmas at worst and would make decent gifts for their own family if they really cannot fathom what to spend them on. You could even buy a toys r us voucher for kids and m&s for adults if you want to look like you really did think about them as individuals. If it were me I'd write a nice best wishes and thanks for your understanding card with some vouchers, accompanied by some sweets/chocolate for the kids and a bottle of wine for the adults. It does not have to cost much at all but will show you really feel bad for messing them about and have taken time out of your own life to try and make up for being a plonker! I would not mind a gift I did not like/use. I have been given alcohol (do not drink) or earrings (no pierced ears, lol) and been really grateful for the thought and effort involved.
