Buying dummies for babies..

I know this is off track abit...but is it me or are dummies getting bigger? I seem to see lots of little ones with the most ENORMOUS dummies...they just look like a dummy with eyes - I'm sure they didn't used to be this big years ago....0

Not so much as responding to OP (buy whichever one baby settles with best - ignore age!) but more about the mum picking up dummy and putting back in babies mouth (sucking etc.). Imho this is actually doing more GOOD to the infant than BAD. Reason being is that by steralising everything, the infants immunity system is not being allowed to develop antibodies against infection / germs etc. that they will need in plentiful supply later on in life. By exposing infant to some germs etc. this will be allowed to happen. I obviously would advocate proper cleansing of all feed bottles etc. and routine cleaning / steralising of dummies etc. but hey if it accidentally falls on the floor, pick it up and continue feeding ..... same with the smarties that fall out the tube, get 'em picked up and gobbled! I firmly believe the child will then have some immunity / resistance to germs as they grow older. As before - just my opinion that I'm happy to share.
It was me who posted about that - but I referred to dummies which had been dropped outside. - God knows what's on the pavements - Dog's dirt just being for starters.
If anything falls on the floor indoors, then I completely agree with giving it back to the child.
Some germs are ok and help build up immunity - but I draw the line at the ones on the streets.Cross Stitch Cafe member No. 32012 170-194 2013 195-207.Hello Kitty ballerina 208.AVA 209.OLIVIA 210.ELLA 211.CARLA 212.LOUISE 213.CHARLEY 214.Mother & Child 215.Stop Faffing Completed 2014 216.Stitchers Sampler. 217.Let Them Be Small 218.Keep Calm 219. I was told 12 months for bottles of milk (cos milk goes funny), but 6 months for everything else.0 -

i've been told to sterilise the bottles because they've had milk in them, but everything else just needs washing. i'd forgotten about the 12 month thing, we've got 3 caravan holidays this year, one starting tomorrow and we can't fit the steam steriliser into the car so it will be on my lap, but the 2nd holiday begins on his birthday, so we can leave it at home :T
when the babies lose dummies on the floor (indoors) my sister sucks on it then gives it to her baby, but i run them under the tap, am i just being weird? lol!
us dummy users - did all of the babies have reflux? one of mine did, the one with the dummy.
and yes i thought dummies were getting bigger too, the 6m+ ones are enormous. i don't think the teats are much bigger, but the outside is big. that's thought to prevent cot death though, the clunky chunky handle etc.52% tight0 -

.
Mine didn't have reflux- but the eldest started to suck his thumb (which is cute at 2 weeks, but awful at school age) so using a dummy made him stop.
The youngest when he was born would cram all 4 fingers in his mouth - I thought he was going to choke himself!! So he got one for the same reason.
Must admit - when all the info came out about dummies helping to prevent cot death, I was quite glad I had chosen the way I did.Cross Stitch Cafe member No. 32012 170-194 2013 195-207.Hello Kitty ballerina 208.AVA 209.OLIVIA 210.ELLA 211.CARLA 212.LOUISE 213.CHARLEY 214.Mother & Child 215.Stop Faffing Completed 2014 216.Stitchers Sampler. 217.Let Them Be Small 218.Keep Calm 219. My HV told me to stop sterilising everything but bottles at 6 months. So none of the spoons etc get sterilised, although the dummies do sometimes.
I think the 12 month sterilising advice for bottles is relatively new.
my eldest son has just turned 10 and it was 12 months (for bottles) back then too
after 6 months dummies / weaning bowls / spoons etc just washed in very hot water and left to drip dry was the advice0 -
well when i had my son 6 years ago i was told 6 months then and the same with my daughter now i think maybe if differs from area to area alsoThe Only Thing Men Can Do Right Is Get Everything Wrong

I had a dummy as a kid, and I still had it when I was 11. How embarrassing do you think that was at 'sleepovers'!!! It hasn't had too much effect on my teeth luckily, but I've vowed not to give my little boy one. He;s now 2 and he's never had one, and hell am I glad. My best mate's baby is the same age almost to the day and he has a dummy, I've seen her walk to the shops at 10pm in the pouring rain to get him one when he's lost it, Ive seen her pick gloopy sick off it (Im gagging just writing it!) pick it off the floor and have to clean it, he's now getting cheeky and throwing it out of his cot/pram and she has to keep going back upstairs every 5 minutes from 8pm to 10pm, when she tries to take it away you've never seen tantrums like it!
Luckily I have none of this, I had to suffer as a single parent a few weeks of very sleepless nights (worse cos I had my A-level exams at the time!) and once or twice nearly threw the towel in, but I'm so glad I didn't!!! Besides it looks horrible anything past 6 months!0
