kiddies are so cute whether they have dummies or not they all have there own ideas of what they want from us and reading all these posts have been entertaining to say the least! i thought i'd tell you how i got rid of the gorgeous dummy(Eventually!!!!!!) in case it helps someone!! my little girls Eventually got her teeth (as i said earlier aged two amost!!!!!ie on her second birthday the photo has her showing off her brand new two up two down little pearls!!(only but it was a start!!) so i thought as she loved tinkerbell so much she could come into the bedroom and bring a pound coin in return for the precious little dummy!! it worked a treat though i kept the tupperware full of dummies hidden in kitchen cupboard for a good few months in case of a relapse but she never saw a dummy again and i only exchanged one dummy for one coin luckily she never asked to put them all under!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!have fun every day they grow so quick and say the most funny things!0

My mother moaned like heck when I gave my eldest a dummy as a baby - but I pointed out to her that 3 out of 4 of her kids sucked their thumbs for years, (8 (me), 12 and 15!!) and the other chewed a blanket:rolleyes:
I had strict rules wth my son though - He could have it whenever he wanted till he was one, after that he only got it when he was going to sleep (I hate kids trying to talk with a dummy in ther moth!) and at age 2 it was 'given away to another baby' because he had to be a big boy.:rotfl: And I had no problems.
With DS2, it took a while to get him to take a dummy (he started off chewing his fist!) but he takes one when he is going to sleep...I have about 15 of them because he's always flinging them about the place :rotfl:Cross Stitch Cafe member No. 32012 170-194 2013 195-207.Hello Kitty ballerina 208.AVA 209.OLIVIA 210.ELLA 211.CARLA 212.LOUISE 213.CHARLEY 214.Mother & Child 215.Stop Faffing Completed 2014 216.Stitchers Sampler. 217.Let Them Be Small 218.Keep Calm 219. One thing I really don't like about dummies though...is when a child throws it on the ground outside, and their mother picks it up, sucks it clean then puts it back in the child's mouth *shudder*
Hence the reason I have around 15 of them and always carry spare sterilised ones everywhere.Cross Stitch Cafe member No. 32012 170-194 2013 195-207.Hello Kitty ballerina 208.AVA 209.OLIVIA 210.ELLA 211.CARLA 212.LOUISE 213.CHARLEY 214.Mother & Child 215.Stop Faffing Completed 2014 216.Stitchers Sampler. 217.Let Them Be Small 218.Keep Calm 219. Must admit to having done that at least once when it was that or full-scale meltdown. Not advisable, but new mums will do almost anything to make sure their babies don't cry, particularly in public. I had a pathological fear of it, but then I have a very LOUD baby.0

my baby is 10 months old so hopefully the information i got is pretty much up to date.
my baby likes the newborn avent dummies and hates the bigger ones. at 10 months he still has the 0-3 size. i've asked the dentist, the GP and the health visitor and they all say the 0-3 dummy is fine, but to start trying to get rid of it around 12 months.
it says on the box how long you can keep a dummy for, i think it's 12 weeks for silicon (clear teat) and 4 weeks for latex (brown teat). my friend had a scare when her baby sucked a dummy that must have been too old and the end came off, she choked on it. it must have been coming away, but i suppose she forgot to check it. i always replace mine at less than 12 weeks. i just buy more of the 0-3 ones each time. like louise we have a dozen or so dummies because we change them regularly and they are sterilised properly. i think his dummies are cleaner than his thumb.
avent don't seem to change the designs on the dummies very often, i bought the cat and puppy ones for ages, and now there are duck and mouse ones. so i had to make sure i replaced them all at the same time, otherwise it would have been hard to tell which ones were the older ones. once baby is 6 months old and on solids they will always manage to find a bit of carrot or butternut squash under their tongue, to stain the dummy with or spit out onto clean clothes lol! so teas get discoloured and you can't tell which ones are the older ones, best the change them all.52% tight0 -
oh, and my first baby didn't have a dummy, didn't suck his thumb either. i was probably one of those insufferably smug mums who sneer at babies with dummies. but until you have a baby who NEEDS to suck you just don't understand :rotfl:52% tight0

i cant get my daughter to part with hers at all at the moment - she is nearly 15 months its more of a comfort thing with her though i think she very rarely actually puts it in her mouth but she keeps it with her just in case lol.
i took the dummy off my son when he was 8 months old and never looked back.
I would much rather give my children a dummy than take the risk that they may suck here thumb i personally think at least you can take a dummy away you cant take a thumb away. The Only Thing Men Can Do Right Is Get Everything Wrong

My DS is 4 and a half and stucks his thumb a lot! Mainly when tired when you hear him sucking like crazy! He also has a comfort blanket (but then so do i and im nearly 27!) which he didnt take a shine to til he was 6 months old.
Sometimes i think it would have been easier to have him on a dummy and then wean him off as we cant take his thumb away! We tried to get him on dummies when he was a toddler as he sucked his thumb so much once when he was ill that it cracked and we were concerned it would get infected but he was having none of it and his thumb healed quickly with no infection.Bringing up 2 handsome boys and 1 gorgeous girl the MSE way!Joseph born 19th December 2001Matthew born 8th August 2007Tara born 23rd January 20110 -
i knew a boy with a horrid infected thumb when younger, same age as my boy, but my boy never wanted to suck his thumb. he didn't need dummy or thumb, just didn't have that need to suck. it wasn't fantastic parenting on my part, he just didn't need to suck.
babies who do need to suck will suck, my 10 month old was putting his fingers/thumb into his mouth as a newborn in the hospital (but the midwives said not many babies do it so young) so i had a choice, thumb or dummy. he will suck his thumb if he wants a dummy and hasn't got one. i resisted the dummy, i hate them, but after a week or so i was converted.
i know some mums who will use the same dummy for 24 hours or more, whose babies only have one dummy. i know 4 year olds who are still using a dummy and can't talk properly. but there's no need for dummies to be dirty, no need for it to be used every minute of the day or in a school age child (i might eat my word when roo's older lol!). as with many aspects of parenting there are different ways of doing things, and not every dummy using mum is the same. please don't bash us. besides which the question is about sizes of dummy, not 'should i use one'.52% tight0
