Record train fare

  • Just had a look at the map. That's one remote railway line!

But stunningly gorgeous, and not too difficult to find cheap Advance fares on. My girlfriend and I took a holiday on the Isle of Skye earlier this year, travelling Glasgow -> Mallaig (along the 'Harry Potter' line) and then back Kyle of Lochalsh -> Inverness -> Glagsow. With the 34% discount from our 16-25 Railcards, we got single fares each way from/to Glasgow for £9.15 each

It would be interesting to find out how much a taxi would charge for that trip there and back
  • Newquay to Exeter Airport via National Express = £19.60
Exeter Airport to Aberdeen Airport via FlyBe= £47.44
Aberdeen Airport to Kyle of Lochalsh via ScotRail = £20.60
    =£87.64.

...But I would be quite happy to pay the extra £900-ish if its first class(!)

I can complete this journey from Cornwall to Scotland and back for nothing/ zero/nowt.
As part of my terms and conditions as a guard with 27 years service on the railway( Now retired) I get 16 instances of free travel on the railway.
Each instance is valid for 2 days.
I have to rough it a bit as my free pass is only for 2nd class.
If I had to pay, I get a 75% discount on the standard fare.

2/11/09 we visited London, and paid £1 single from Heathrow on the underground all zones.

We got off at Kings Cross and caught a train to Leeds for nothing.
This train got to Leeds on time.

With the free travel card, you just date a box on the card, get on your train and away you go.
