Thieving parents...

Options
My son goes to a holiday club in the half term. On friday, upon picking him up, we discoverd that his lunch bag (containing his nintendo DS) was missing.

We spoke to the staff and they said it was possible another boy with an identical bag had taken it accidentally. The staff then phoned their mobile and left a message asking them to contact us. No-one ever did.

Luckily, this child goes to the same school as ours. My wife saw this boy with his father at school yesterday and asked him about the bag - he denied ever seeing it. However, his younger daughter dropped him in it somewhat because she said - yes, daddy, there were two ben 10 bags in the car on friday.

However, said father is still denying all knowledge....

Evidence all points to them accidentally picking up the bag, and then having it. I'm wondering if they've seen the Nintendo DS in there and taken the opportunity to keep it.

I'm not flippin' happy. Any suggestions what I can do next?

Not sure how old your son is but my 7 year old son attends a holiday club too Paulfoel and they are allowed to bring their gaming consoles but rightly the club take no responsibility for them - though the consoles are locked in the filing cabinet when it is not 'playing' time (they have time restrictions on when and how long they are played with) and given back at the end of the day

In the past my son has lent a game to another boy who he doesn't really know (the club is open to 3 different schools) and we have been lucky in that the parent returned it to the club immediately.

I have impressed upon him that the DS is his responsibility and if he chooses to take it to club then he must not lend games to anyone and must make sure that he remembers to collect it at the end of the day - I have made quite clear that I won't be replacing it.

I think the only thing you can do is speak to the club and see if they can leave another message for the parent - I think if their child has picked it up and they are denying it to keep the DS then that might make them 'find' it
Failing that I am not sure there is anything else you can do

Yeah. Similar sort of thing with my son.

I think I will speak to the club again and see if they can contact them again. They might suddenly remember if they get hassled.

Failing that, I'm not planning to let them get away with it. If needs be, I'll find out where they live, pay them a visit, and point out the errors of their actions so to speak....

I'm really wassed off that someone could do this though. Perhaps its just me but I'd never even consider doing something like this. If it was me I'd have rung the club the instant I found out the mistake and then offered to deliver it to the rightful owner. Certainly wouldnt be keeping it and lying low to see if you had to give it back.

Try the nice approach with the wife first, she might be more likely to give it back and think ah the poor little kid and his dad's nice etc

OP certainly speak to them quietly again. You are probably 100% correct but please be careful you don't do anything you shouldn't.

In these situations I am not at my best and could easily blow my top and do something that would get me into trouble, so I try and avoid as much as possible. Be very measured in what you say or do.

    Good luck.

I think this is what most decent people would do - however sadly not everyone is decent.
