New build flat, BT connected master socket but....

......the other two sockets don't work in my daughter's flat. She rang the developers who said that they only connect the main socket and it's up to her to get the others connected. Is that something anyone can do, or just BT?

No, beyond the master socket is her own property and not BT's responsibility. She can do it herself or get an independent telecoms engineer to do it-either way much cheaper than asking BT, whih would cost a minimum of 125 pounds.

Thanks. So without me going there and looking, am I right to assume that the two extension sockets have got the wiring there, but it's just not connected? And it's really as simple as connecting the three wires to terminals 2, 3 & 5?

I doubt that it's wired at all if not connected, but just unscrew the faceplate to check. Only terminals 2 and 5 require connection, 3 is the bell wire which, isnot required on modern phones. Just folllow the same colour sequence as in the master socket.

You'd think if it was a new build flat and they'd actually put sockets into three rooms, they'd have put the wires in at the same time. Or am I expecting too much of developers? Anyway, thanks again for your help. I'll get her to unscrew one of the face plates tonight and send me a picture of the insides. I might have to send her a picture of a screwdriver first though. :D

True, but if they had put the cabling in. you'd expect them to have connected it too! If they are surface mounted boxes it should be obvious, as there will be a cable exiting.

She's removed the faceplate, and there are six wires, four of which are connected. Number 2 has an all blue wire, number 3 has orange / white, number 4 has white / orange and number 5 has white / blue. The two wires that aren't connected are green / white (which I presume is number 1), and what looks like all brown? If only 2 and 5 need to be connected, will disconnecting 3 and 4 do anything? If they're not working, could it be that although the extension boxes are both wired, they're not actually connected in the main box?

Are you referring to the faceplate of the master socket?
The correct colours/connections are shown here:
    http://www.telephonesuk.co.uk/wiring_info.htm
Assuming no. 2 is blue with white stripes, it's correctly wired, but only that and no. 5 (white with blue stripes) need to be connected. The bell wire (no. 3-orange and white) is not needed on modern domestic phones. Yes, it should work with the others disconnected, they may just have been connected for neatness.
If there are no other cables in the master socket, then you only have the wiring supplied from the street to the master, and the other sockets would need wiring up to the master.

That's the diagram I was looking at while talking to her on the phone earlier. I think she may need to be tested for colour blindness lol. The best thing is for me to go and have a look at the weekend as it's about 25 miles from here. She was looking in one of the two extension sockets, not the master socket, so it looks as if the wiring was put in when they built it, and it's probably just not connected right. Thanks for your help.

In our place we got sockets in every room (except the loo). Never use them now. We swirched to DECT handsets and use these as a mini-PABX around the house too for transferring calls..... indivitual phones on the line is asking for trouble - one off hook and the lot goes down!
