Wanted: Best Free Internet Security Software

Hi All,

I am not much of a computer whizz and every year I find myself buying a new Internet Security Package (Norton Antivirus etc). A lot of people have told me that you can get this software for free on the internet...

Where can I find this and which is the best one?

Thanks for all your help!

You cant really get a free 'all in one'

The best 3 free av programs are AVG, AVAST and AVIRA
As a general id suggest AVAST (personally I use Avira but theres some updating issues of late)

The windows firewall is fine for general use but if you want to have more control then PC TOOLS FIREWALL, COMODO and ZONEALARM are the 3 main ones (I use pctools)

MALWAREBYTES as a secondary scanner (Id suggest this no matter WHAT package you get)

FIREFOX with the NOSCRIPT plugin in place of internet explorer (Makes browsing far safer)

SPYBOT to keep the HOSTS file in check

  • AVG works for me, and i use adaware by lavasoft to get rid of spywharwe. I did notice that my local branch of tesco were selling kaspersky internet security for £14.99 with a 3 machine key this is awsome value and i bought one. If you have the bucks that the best but if not AVG will get you by.

Good advice aliEnRIK i use Avira'commodo firewall'malwarebytes'Superantispware and ccleaner. never had anything major go wrong with any of my PCs and laptops. But the main thing i good old common sence! ie !!!!!! sites'file sharing riddled with viruses and and spyware and nasties stay away and you should be fine.

A good old dollop of common sense if your first defence whatever software you use, free or paid.

As you say yourself that you are not much of a computer whizz, it might be worth reading up on signs to look for etc etc.

I'd certainly drop AVG as part of the 3 best free anti-virus scanners, it once was excellent, but times move on and now it's considered a poor relation to Avira and Avast.

Adaware (the free version) is also not what is used to be. Follow AliEnRIK's advice with: Malwarebytes AntiMalware and I'd add SpyBot S+D to the mix.

Always follow the direct links from the creators sites to download as in this post.

If you were to switch to a Mac, you'd be free of both the expense and the anxiety and hassle of having to combat the problem.

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

forget all about this programme and that programme, just use Sandboxie whenever you go on the internet and you will never ever get a virus/malware infection. Another one that does this is Returnil, google for both Returnil is free Sandboxie you have to buy.

 Blooming heck - thats good advice - get a mac for a fortune because you want to save on £14 for internet security software (which can be bought from ebay).

Virus wise - avoid AVG as per some other comments, was ok once but always leak something through (the free version)

Firewall - zonealarm free was ok for a period but so many prompts....

Personally - avoid all free forms of internet security programs.

There are trial versions which can be downloaded, 15 days, 30 days and even a 3 month trial version of Panda Internet Security. If you fancy installing, re-installing all the time.

But best to just spend £14-£17 on ebay and get a 3 user licence copy for one year coverage of Kaspersky Internet security (which is available free for a year to Barclays bank customers).
