  • I applied for this DLA and was refused. Im struggling to walk because of an industrial injury which is still going through, Im also angry towards my company for employing sub contractors who basically could not give a $hite. Im currently having Anger management courses and also counselling because I cannot come to terms with this disability Im left with. I got realy cheesed off with the questions they ask on the form, like ,how long does it take for this and that, does anyone actualy time themselves. This time Ive re applied and just sent a copy of a medical documentation which I recently underwent, all the relative information is on this document. They probably will return it. I know people who claim this benefit and they walk about as if nothings wrong, obviously they know how to fill in the form unlike myself.

you say they walk around "as if nothing's wrong" ...many disabilities are invisible. If you think they're claiming fraudulently, and you know about their condition, report them, don't just moan about it. They ask how long things take so they can assess your needs, for example, how long it takes you to walk 30 metres or whatever is very important, oh, and I don't think any of us are thrilled to be disabled...

    I have a hidden disability

Just because you can't see what wrong with me, please don't assume i am not suffering just as much as you.

How far can you walk before you need to stop because of pain.

    I can't was my answer. 0 meters.

Can you contact your local dial, as for an occupational heath assessment, these people can help with walking sticks / wheelchairs, they don't judge you, they aren't there to see if you slip up. They are there for you, also help with filling in DLA forms.

I hope you win your case with work, I had to leave mine because they had no understanding of my illnesses, I provided booklets and website addresses to help them to help me, in returned they treated me like an idiot.

Being disabled sucks, i know we all agree with that.

one lesson we all need to learn and are all at different stages of it, is accepance, accept you have a disability, learn to manage it and how you can make your life easier, being angry (although totally understand) with your works isn't going to help you in the long run, anger management is a big step towards acceptance.

I wish you well and hope it works out for you
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

That`s quite insulting to people like me who have invisible disabilities,i have severe epilepsy as an example.
With your attitude towards the DLA process i`d be surprised if you got it on re-application as its about your care and or mobility issues not what some document says is wrong with you.
  • Jeff, you atre clearly feeling frustrated.
I am another who has a 'hidden' disability...you might not notice it if you see me for two minutes. but ask anyone who knows me (lovely mum for example!) and thye'll tell you just how much my dsability inpacts on my life, and theirs.
I am High-Functioning Autuistic/Aspergers and also have Dyspraxia. Some days I am housebound. On a 'good' day I need to be escorted outside as I have no sense of direction; poor muscle coordination;panic attacks; little awareness of danger;no social skills.
I agree with you that there is a skill to filling out the forms. I consider myself to be of above-average intelligence (Post grad maths qualifications and multilingual too!) and I can't fill in those forms! I have had brilliant help from DIAL, they have fillled in all my forms, made phonecalls (I am unable to use a phone) and will represent me at the tribunal.
I really hope you get the help you need, for your anger issues, for your injuries, and for claiming any benefit to which you are entitled.
Please try and give the rest of us a break. We might look okay, but you need the full story.
  • Well what can I say but sorry. I never meant to express my feelings as negative towards those with hidden disabilities. My anger is aimed at those who still continue to go and play golf etc, I can no longer go and play golf which was my sport. I played at a high level even though im 53 years of age. Most of my enjoyable activities such as golf, going to football and even the jobs I once did around the home have stopped because of this disability i have been left with. What I do find annoying is those questions, how long for this and that, each action surely does not need timing. Im going to fill in the form once more to the best of my ability and wait and see what happens.

Timing an activity gives an idea of how much care you need, if it takes you, for example, 15 minutes to get out of bed in the morning, as opposed to the minute it might take an able bodied person then that helps to show, to some extent, how you struggle with that activity. It's not an easy benefit to get, and there is definitely some skill required in filling it in and sending adequate evidence in with it. You need to back up everything you say, why it takes you X times longer to do the activity and how you adapt things to make them easier/possible for you to do. Good luck
