Unbundled Gotcha!

I may have unwittingly made a big mistake. I moved to Talktalk from a BT-based ISP 17 months ago and now wish to switch to another unbundled supplier.

BUT I'm told I can't do that (by O2): I have to move back to BT first before they can deal with me. Thus I'm faced with not one but two upheavals while my broadband is being tranferred.

This is the first time I've heard about this gotcha - am I alone, or have I been living with my head in the sand?

  • It kind of makes sense really. Both your telephone rental and broadband are now supplied by Talktalk. Your region must not have an O2 LLU exchange and therefore, your only option is the BT exchange.

What you would have to do, is reconnect back the telephone to BT and then phone them up.

Just a warning though! I am on O2 home broadband access, which you will be, if you move to them. At the current moment, the internet speed is horrendous. Really rubbish. From 4.30pm to the following morning - monday to friday, the speed just reaches 300kbp/s - less than 0.5MB/s line. Weekends are even worse! Unusuable!

Alot of complaints to them at the moment. Log on to the O2 forum on their website. You will know what I mean.

How do you deduce that the OP cannot get O2 on an LLU basis? I agree with you about Access, but if he can get O2 Home Standard then no reason not to sign up with O2 once the line rental has gone back to BT.

    simples.
If they could get o2 on LLU then o2 wouldnt have mentioned having to go back to BT.
o2 would just connect them direct to their equiptment

    Exactly. Cheers.

But O2 don't do line rental. He has to go back to a BT line (or non LLU line) to get an O2 broadband service, whether it's Access or LLU.

No you're not alone. We had a BT line and, many moons ago, signed up to Tiscali. They didn't notify us that they were going to change us to LLU (let alone ask our permission). The only time we found out was when we tried to migrate to another provider and BT charged us about £60 or £70 to reinstall their equipment in the exchange! We hadn't even been aware it had been removed (and I'm the sort of person who does actually read the Ts&Cs!)
  • Thanks everyone for your replies. So I'm right: Taltalk have locked me into my phone & broadband supply with only a painfull exit via BT in prospect. It simply strengthens my decision to quit because of their poor asian customer service. I'm off to Utilities Warehouse, pain notwithstanding.
