Dear All
I am new to this forum so apologise if Im in the wrong place. I could really do with some help, I received a letter through the post yesterday for an old abbey account that I had. This letter was from abbey and said that the opening and closing balance on my account was £300. Now i had problems with this account and the account was closed and I paid up my outstanding over draft to a debt collection agaency in full.
I also submitted a claim to reclaim the bank charges on this account. I took the letter with id to a branch and asked if I could withdraw the balance which it said was £300 on the letter but one person said the account was at £0 and another said it was -£300 ? I dont understand why they waste time sending out these letters which they say are for info only if they are not even correct. I could not possible be -£300 as this was paid back in full inc all charges. I thought that the £300 might have been a payment for the bank charges I reclaimed and they hadnt told me that they had put part of them back? I have no idea where this £300 figure comes from. They said that they also do not know where the letter came from but it was headed Abbey and delivered via tnt in an Abbey envelope. The balance on the letter was recent but they say its not there? the number on the letter (01142704819) is a recorded message saying that if the debt has been transferred they will contact me directly?
very confused, has any one else received one of these letters?
apprciate any help

Received the same letter yesterday. Was with Abbey about 4 years ago, don't recall actually closing the account but I must have considering it's the first time in years I've received a supposed 'balance' report.
24/04/09 Statement Opening Blanace £8.08
23/10/09 NET Balance £8.08
Called the number on the lhetter and got the same thing. I suspected the letter was maybe some how fraudalen, as the template doesn't look like what I'd expect of a bank statement.
Anyway If you google the phone number on the letter head WITHOUT spaces the top result should be of insult. There's about 15 responses from people who've received the same letter in the past day or so.
I can't post the link directly as I'm a potential 'spammer'
Still a little bit puzzled. It seems alot of people have received this letter. Oddly enough, my Brother and Sister who are actually with Abbey actively, they've received nothing of the sort.
I'll give them a ring and find out what it's about anyway. Got nothing else to do at the moment0 -
Me too. See this web page:

I am "craig".
To summarise, I've been advised that these letters are simply the result of a new legal requirement to notify us of their accounting procedure when writing off a debt. The Abbey advisor I spoke to said she was "100% certain" there was no money in the account and the amount cited was simply the closing debt on my account.0 -
Hi Craig
Thank you for your reply I guess they must have meant -£300 when the debt got passed across then?
Thanks for your help0 -
i had the same letter from abbey saying i had a balance of £400 pounds
i thought Christmas had come early.
i have not used the account for over five years as me and abbey fell out big time after horrendous charges they put on my account
so i when else where .
so a few years latter started trying to clame them back ,the charges of about £1800 plus interest but as to date no luck and no luck with Lloyds.
i cant remember if bailiffs was invold with abbey but i know i paid them what i thought was owed on the account at the time and have not heard a thing for well over five years .
any way
i went down to abbey to day think my Christmas bonus was early this year and was told the account was closed and she could not see the balance of the account as it was not held their and was closed .
she seamed to think a debt collection agency would be in touch with me in the next few days and i should ring the number on the letter
[01142704819] the same number as you all have had
so not to sure what to do now ?0 -
They are sending these letters out and CapQuest are being given the debts. PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO CAPQUEST since if you have reclaimed bank charges the account is in dispute and the bank have no right nor the DCA to pursue a disputed debt.
The technical term is either (a) Sod Off or (b) Sue me.0 -
must admit seems strange that all the letters are all showing a balance as of this year? Surely it should say zero? or show a plus then a minus to zero the account ie write the debt off? Is it because we have tried to claim back bank charges so the account is sort of in dispute?
very confusing0 -
Same thing happened to us just been down to the branch where we were told that Bradford had made a technical error, had sent hundreds of these letters out and we would recieve a letter of apologie a week after the original letter had been sent. The letter said that we had a net balance of £752.51. I assumed it was the money for charges that we had claimed back over a year ago. We have not had a current Abbey account for years as also had major probs when we tried to get our chrge fees back, they closed our account! We paid up what we owed though at the time so I 100% could not owe them anything. I think it is terrible that this can happen, we were overjoyed when letter came through now just absolutely furious!!!0

I've had two of these now, showing a balance of £182. Mine refers to an account that was closed and referred to debt collectors to recover the outstanding overdraft. I paid it off in full in June/July 2008.
When i asked in the branch they seemed to think that it was money owed back to me!0 -
Reading the posts again, I thought I'd let you know a few things about my situation:
1) I have another active account in joint names with my dh.
2) The original account was in my maiden name when it was closed, and when I paid off the outstanding amount, but these statements are in my married name.
3) I haven't claimed bank charges (yet - that's how I found this post!).0 -
My other half tonite got a letter from capquest demanding a payment of £1,100 for and Abbey account he closed 15 years ago. he has spoken to Capquest who have told him that they don't knnow what the debts for just that they purchased the debt from Abbey. We haven't had any letters from the Abbey and as we are regulars on here my OH haschecked his credit referencing only two months ago from experian and all the others and he owes nothing to noone.
Why are were suddenly recieving this letter or is it a scam?
any help much appreciated.0
