Blackberry 8900 internet

i have ordered a blackberry 8900 phone for my daughter, and having talked to lots of "helpful" shop assistants trying to get me to take out many different plans have ended up getting it on a orange 30 plan (discounted to £20 a month) 400 mins, unlimited texts.

i have the idea that i will now bolt on blackberry internet on top at 4.95 a month, orange say this will give me 500mg of internet which is the same as their internet bolt on but will let the blackberry work which their normal internet won't.

Does this sound right, or have i got totally the wrong end of the stick?

Also does my daughter have to have blackberry push email activated all the time as this seems like it will use up her allowence quickly? she currently uses hotmail anyway so could just access this via msn home page.

thanks for reading and any tips would be appreaciated

For your daughter to be able to access the internet and get her email she would need the Blackerry Internet Service top up.

The email is compressed and encyrpted to a standard where each mail uses about 2k of data as the device knows how to decrypt and decompress the data. If she continued to access MSN using the home page she would go through her usage a lot quicker.

Hi, I have the exact same phone also with orange.
You do have to have the 4.95 add on thingy otherwise the internet doesn't work; I'm not sure why its done like this, but I briefly had the phone on o2 also and it seems blackberrys have a special internet 'plan' being the 4.95 add on bit.

I have email turned on all the time; use it sometimes but not that much. I use the internet browser a fair bit I'd say I'm a pretty heavy user- every day I'll always use it to check emails; news, facebook, football scores etc etc and I've never gone over the 500mb allowance :)

I dont download files over it that much though as its only 2g and a bit slow. But I have used the app store saying that.

I wouldn't worry, 500mb is actually more than it sounds for the web browser and you can use wifi when you want to download bigger files anyway and that won't count towards the allowance :)

Any other q's let me know :)
  • oh, and you can get on hotmail going to mobile.live.com and I bookmarked my inbox; check it a fair few times a day and nowhere near allowance :)

if you're really worried you can always turn off images in the browser options and save heaps.
