I don't want to open a can of worms with a male / female discussion, but am I alone in noticing that the vast majority of these type of threads in which people have some kind of over-inflated idea of their value to a company - with accompanying bad attitude - are generally posted by or about young women employees?

What is that all about? A new socio-economic phenomena of some kind?

This reminds me of the lengthy debate about someone's wife being made redundant elsewhere in this forum.

It's not a new phenomena that women expect to be paid an equal wage for like work, as per employment legislation.

It's mainly women who have these arguments because it's mainly women who are not paid justly. Perhaps some of them (OP) are taking the micky, but others may well have a problem with their employers because they are genuinely being discriminated against.

You cannot make these comments without having a male/female discussion because that's exactly what it is. Salary brackets are not negotiable depending on the presence of a penis.

Sheesh, what a total over reaction some people have had to my silly comments!!

Listen I have worked for this company 9 years, I can truly say that I have been one of the hardest working members of staff the whole time while employed by this company, having always addressed the bosses with total respect at all times, worked until midnight at the office, plus weekends and often for free working until I was 8 and half months pregnant because the needed me. I certainly have not been taking the mick at any point. I one day saw a list of everyones salary including the management because it was stupidly left on my desk by the owner of the company. I saw that others who happened to be the 'male workers' were being paid more then myself and other females doing the exact same job at the time. I respectfully challenged the boss about this who said that instead of giving me equal pay, said I could work from home instead updating the company website. He knew I had children and would be pleased about this because I had to commute 30 miles to work each day. I know he can't handle the fact that I know everyones salary including the management.
You are sure the list wasn't left on your desk on purpose?

I've known people who have found out how much they were earning in respect to other people as someone "accidentally" left such information on their desk, who they later found out who it was.

And working from home just means you personally are not around to tell the other women they are being discriminated against.

There as you would have been better off telling the other women in the company to find other jobs (when the market was good) by implying they are being paid less then the men in the company.

Recruitment costs companies money particularly if they have to recruit lots of new employees at once.

Now frankly I only do two day a week for this company and work 25hrs freelancing for myself making very good money. I don't need this job but I am not being turfed out because he doesn't like me and wants the job for his nephew. I do a very good job for the two days which creates a lot of revenue for the company, but I don't care if I lose the job whatsoever, but some bosses think that they can treat their staff badly and get rid of them when it suits!! This boss once got rid of a lady because she was too fat, so trust me he is a nasty piece of work!!
If you are not in a union join one.

In my experience nasty bosses don't like the fact that you can make up legit legal reasons to have a union rep accompany you to various meetings, as they don't like saying things in front of witnesses.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

No, but salaries are negotiable so the presence or otherwise of said appendage is irrelevant, or does not having one make it harder to negotiate for oneself?

Salaries are indeed negotiable, but the absence of a pay spine, or bracket, and an employer attempting to take advantage of an employee by paying them substantially less than someone else doing like work can result in an Equal Pay claim and ET.

This is why so many Public SErvices, ie councils are doing Equal Pay reviews right now.

I refer the honorable poster back to my previous post.

Salaries are negotiable. The process of negotiation involves two parties trying to get the best position for themselves. So far as I last checked, the ability of being able to discuss and argue one's corner had nothing to do with a person's sex. To suggest otherwise is incredibly sexist.

    End of discussion.

    Delightful.

Do impair your wisdom to the thousands of Council Workers who are being re graded due to Equal Pay Legislation.

Council workers. They're idiots and can't negotiate for themselves, relying instead on unions to do it for them.

    End of Discussion again.

You might think council workers are idiots, but they understand the legal responsibility of a company to adhere to Equal Pay Legislation, which you seem to be struggling with.
