Broadband question

sync rates are the speeds that your router or modem negotiates with your broadband provider, based on the quality of the line, distance from the exchange, noise on line etc, the equipment can detect the quality of the signal, and sets an appropriate speed which can maintain error free connections.

Your download speed will always be lower than the sync rate.

How on earth do you connect a MacBook to broadband by Firewire?

FireWire does support networking (IP over 1394).

I assume they meant "ethernet" though.

I wasn't contesting it; I was asking how on earth one does it!

What does one plug the other (non-Mac) end of the Firewire lead into?

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

Sorry, perhaps it is ethernet, Lost in translation! It is a white cable with yellow connections. But most of the time I use wireless, only used cable when doing speed tests as I understood that wireless cuts the connection speed.

I'll give my best shot at answering the questions about remote monitoring of speed...

The ISP can check what rate your router is synced at because their own kit is at the other end of the link at the echange and can report this to them.

If they supplied the router there is a chance that it can be controlled remotely and put into some sort of loopback/debugging mode so that the actual throughput speeds could be measured. This is unlikely to be happening and is pointless anyway as throughput varies depending on contention at the time.

They are undoubtedly quoting you the rate your modem/router is syncing at. The most you can get (on the UK system a least) is around 86% of sync as useful download because of overheads (data is sent in packets and some additional data is needed by the protocol to control that but that data is useless to you). In the UK it can actually be worse than this because BTw impose an IP rate that is lower than the sync rate - sometimes a lot lower if there has been a problem on the line.

The reason I initially said they were plain lying is because the upstream sync doesn't match any of the UK standard rates.

I'd be minded to view with scepticism what Free has told you about checking your line.

Where we live, no LLU is available but we get pretty good and reliable ADSLMax (usually between 5.6 and 6.3 mb/sec, except at peak times) from PlusNet (now a subsidiary of BT). We are, we are told, precisely 308 metres from our local exchange, as the bat flies.

Not so long ago, we suffered some prolonged outages and filed a fault report.

They put us though the usual hurdles (Tip: having a spare/backup ADSL modem and router is handy for convincing them the fault does not lie with your own kit – so don't sell or throw out your old one when you upgrade to something swishier) and then agreed to investigate.

Fortunately, two of our neighbours also use PlusNet: two others use BT and another uses Tiscali. I telephoned them (at least that bit was still working). They all confirmed that they were having exactly the same problem. It was what BT apparently calls a "catastrophic local failure" at the exchange.

We waited. A few hours later, the service was restored. When I checked my email, I found one from PlusNet that had been sent to me during the middle of this prolonged local failure. It announced that they had carried out a full test of my line and that everything was fine; the fault must lie with my own equipment.

    Yeah, right!

I replied, explaining the local failure at the exchange experienced by everyone in our area, some on PlusNet, some not, and asked them how they had managed to arrive at the verdict that our line was fine when nobody in the vicinity was getting any service as a result of faulty BT equipment at our local exchange.

Three months later, I have yet to receive a reply...
