When I do a test my speed is never more than 1000kbps upload and 100kbps upload. But my provider says it is 2438kbps down and 166 up! So can they check the speed? Modem is connected but not computer.

How do you connect to the internet if your modem is not connected to your computer? No free lunch, and no free laptop

For the past couple of weeks I have been away from home and they have just sent me the speeds as a result of my continuous complaints. At home Macbook is connected with firewire.0

I think you've caught them out telling porkies. With that upstream they can't even have quoted sync rates which they possibly could monitor remotely.
If you are not satisfied with your ISP why do you stick with them?0 -
What do BT say your line can support?

Thanks for replies. Just to confirm a couple of points can they test the up and down speeds without a computer being connected?
The line is in France where we live, am in UK at the moment so know no-one is using the line.
The contract states " you will benefit from 2560kb/s reception and 160kb/s emission" It does not state "up to"
It is not easy leaving your ISP in France, they cut you off and then leave you without a line for months! As friends have found out.
The company is called Free by the way but they are the third independent company we have used over the years and they are all cr*p!0 -
I ask again, can a provider test download and upload remotely when there is no computer connected to the modem?0

Yes why not?
All they need to do is send something to the modem and see how long it takes.0 -
They are probably quoting sync rates, you are comparing with download tests which vary with who you do a test with, and when, and will never equal the sync rate. You can't just send something to the modem, it has nowhere to go.!!

How on earth do you connect a MacBook to broadband by Firewire?
Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:
As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.
