Lesson 1: How to pay by credit card on ebay using paypal.

remove funds from paypal before making payment, then set your account up so that paypal debit your credit card and not your bank account when there are no funds available in your paypal account to cover the payment for the ebay purchase in question.

Hey presto you just used your credit card to pay for the transaction. Simples ;) (well not really but what is simple with paypal :D)

    DOh your still using Paypal.

Doh, i know, but if it all goes a bit pete tong you can stick in a claim with your card company, not sure if your card company will allow it? ask first as many will....do we need argue this point more?

it seems some people just want to go round in circles to me.

As per my post above, the discussion about whether credit cards allow chargebacks is ongoing, an official MSE email states that they do not. My own single case of a claim suggests MSE may be wrong as my claim was allowed by HSBC.

The reason we got sidetracked is that you stated that paypal is not safe and OP should use a credit card instead, then merely told us all how to use paypal.

The official MSE view is here:

    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/section75-protect-your-purchases

    Exceptions to section 75 protection:

    A. As always with these things there are a few things that escape the safety net. First is anything to do with the purchase of land as this is controlled by regulation from the Financial Services Authority. Two further areas, caused by the indirect nature of the payment are as follows:
When you buy through third parties. Travel agents, paypal etc. You’re usually unlikely to be covered when payments are made to a company that isn’t the one providing you with the good or service because the credit card company must have a direct relationship for them to be equally liable.
The first main area is paying via an online processer such as PayPal, WorldPay or Google Checkout. Though these can have their own refund systems, they aren't as strong as the legal protection of Section 75.

let me correct you, yes i said i don't think paypal is safe at all (that’s paypal and all it's policies and rules blah blah blah) Sorry if this offends anyone but it's just my opinion of them.

so i suggested using a credit card to fund the purchase this way even if it's done via paypal you have the added protection from your card meaning you do not have to rely on paypal as in effect you have used your credit card to pay albeit via paypal.

As for all the discussion in these forums you reference regarding whether or not this would qualify you for protection my response is check first with your card issuer and they will confirm what the many speculative posters here can not, if they give you the green light then you have some added protection.

Why is this upsetting some people?:confused::confused:

I think people are only upset that you may be misunderstanding how it all works, none of us would want to see a fellow MSE user fall foul of paypal rules.

well thank you, your concern is touching, but i would not fall foul of "the rules" as if i was to do what i have advised here i would follow my own advice and check with my card company beforehand so that i knew i was covered by them, then frankly, who cares about paypal's rules?

Any Decent seller and any sensible person using ebay. Not understanding paypals rules as you don't seem to is just asking to walk into a scam, but hey not my problem.

i understand paypal perfectly, and that it is wide open to exploitation by scammers and i understand that buyers and sellers get ripped off regularly. i understand also that it is therefore better to have the added protection provided by your credit card issuer when making larger purchases, or to not use paypal at all, i.e cash on collection where viable but if the only way you can fathom someone having a different opinion to yours is to convince yourself that they are idiots who "don't understand" the subject as well as yourself then i'll wear that cap.......just to shut you up.......

Thanks for all the Input. But seems many other people didn't think it was a scam, as he just sold out all 20 of these products.

In case you were interested what it was. He sold 20 new Iphone 3GS 16GB for £299.

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290365919077&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I will continue to monitor his feedback the next few days. If it shows that it is not a scam I will kick myself. But with higher priced items I am always a bit more cautious. What in the end made me decide against it was the fact that it said that Paypal would only cover £150, which would still have cost me another £149 if it was something dodgy.
