I'd think about putting some down by the back door if you think you might get up late or he might need to do one...then if it's on the paper, easy to clean, but don't get in the habit, only if you think you may not catch it in time. Mum did this with both our rescue dogs, and the only time they had accidents after getting into a routine would be if they had eaten something that upset their tummy, or when they were both a LOT older (one about 19, other lived to 13) and it was in the last few months that they couldn't hold it - then it isn't their fault - mum can't move as fast and dad goes to work early

HI everyone. I know this question has been asked so many times and some are probably bored about reading it BUT I would really appreaciate some advice on house training! I really want some clarification because I am reading different things constantly. Mainly, whether to put some newspaper down or not?!?

Some are saying (books included) Put newspaper down and gradually decrease the amount laid, eventually only having one by the back door BUT when you see him 'looking like he needs to go' don't leave him to do it on the paper but take him outside. So really the paper is there for when you don't catch him soon enough or for when you're not watching him.

Just to confuse me though, I have also read NOT to put paper down and simply carry out the taking outside part after every meal, sleep, play etc etc and when you catch him 'needing to go'. Theory is, having paper confuses them about going inside and outside. In this case, when you are not watching and they need to go, they just go on the floor? You clean up and say nothing more.

Some clarification would be greatly appreciated. I want to get this right to make a happy home and puppy!! I don't want to confuse him with different techniques!

    Thank you!

Ok, you have to re think toilet training.

Your pup knows how to go to toilet, YOU need to be trained in catching on to when he needs going and getting him outside in time :D And eventually your pup will learn that toilet means outside - not inside

Allowing pup to use paper or pads in the house says to him its ok to use the house.

The modern and quickests way to get a dog clean in the house is not to allow him oppertunity to go in the house - so yes its outside after every feed and sleep and every hour in between

Its hard work for a week or two but with prompts he will soon learn to pee on command and as he gets bigger his bladder control will get better

    Good luck xx
  • Here's a pic of him earlier today.....

  • Okay, that has helped me massively. I will stop stocking up on newspaper and just go with the taking him outside every hour and after he's done anything e.g. eat, sleep, play etc!

I also understand that after taking him outside and whilst he is doing his business, I saw a code word like 'get busy' or something to that affect, then after the business is done, lots of praise and a treat?! Is that correct? The code word must be said during the business!

Just curious, how long generally does it take for them to be house trained?
  • P.S. Hughesy84 - what a cute puppy!!

You do what needs to be done all the time and house training will be weeks rather then months

I have never had a pup thats not totally clean within 4 weeks, even rescues that have had no toilet training at all

Out every hour, on the hour - and perhaps some in-betweens if just woken or fed. Always go out with pup and make sure its not play time - dont engage in play
When the pup is in flow - give the cue - I use wee wees cos Im common :rotfl:

When pup has finished - BIG FUSS. No need for treats, just BIG FUSS. Dont know if you have potty trained a toddler - but you get the idea - BIG FUSS for producing.

You will soon learn when your pup really does need to go - you will soon recognise when they can hold for two hours - then three etc

All mess in the house just wiped up and no comment

Now I also get up in the night. This in my mind really installs in pup that toilet is outside only. I also have pup in my bedroom in a crate so he can alert me by crying that he needs to go. If you dont have pup in with you then Id say set the alarm for about 4 hours, get up, take pup out - do the business, praise, back to bed. Less lights the better as you want pup to settle again asap. If hes already messed bt four hours, you know the next night to get up after three hours.

What you are doing is making sure pup has no chance of getting it wrong and heaping huge praise on him for doing it right. Accidents are OUR fault, not pups.

Its hard work and perhaps I am over zealous in getting a pup clean, but it works for me and Id rather have a hard two or three weeks then still be struggling 6/8 months down the line
  • Whats the best stuff to clean up the piddle?! Non-bio washing up liquid was it!?

Our pup is doing great - a few little mistakes, but we will get them im sure :T
