I'm with vodafone on a 30 day rolling contract. I've requested and just this morning received my PAC code so that I can switch to Virgin mobie but it just occured to me that requesting the PAC code may not be classed as giving my 30 days notice?

Can someone clarify if I actually need to ring them up again and actually state that I wish to give 30 days notice to cancel too?

As long as you use the pac inside 30 days your contract will end. If you don't use the pac your contract will just carry on.

Hi Jon, are you saying that requesting and using the PAC within the 30 days is "giving them notice"? I know (typically) using your PAC it will automatically close down your previous account/contract (in my case vodafone) and that would be fine on a phone/account that was out of contract (i.e after the 12/24 months), but I have a SIM only 30 day rolling contract that they stipulate that you have to give 30 days notice to cancel. I requested a PAC code a few days back, but it just occured to me that the act of requesting a PAC code in itself my not be deemed as giving 30 days notice?

Good questions and something I wantred to clear up.

As companies say you have to give 30 days notice but your Pac only lasts 30 days it kind of implys that you will have to pay an extra month with your old network if you use your PAC to end your contract.

For example my three contract ends on the 12th of Jan. I am likely to move networks. If i ask for my Pac code on the 31st Dec will I get penalised for not giving 30 days notice or will my contract still end on the 12th Jan.

I ask because I will ikely take out a contract for a HD2 or Hero when this ends. but don't want to have to pay for 2months in a single months. When could I take out my new contract.?

Sorry for jumping on your thread but seems like a reasonable place to ask.

Ok, if you have to give 30 days notice then if you use your pac 10 days after it was issued to you you'll get charged for those 10 day and the next 20 on your last bill (don't cancel the DD when you get the pac, you will still get a final invoice).

If you just cancel, if you don't want to keep your number they'll just bill you for 30 days from the point you request the cancellation and then the sim/number will die.

Either way you have to pay the 30 days...
    Hope that helps?

Wallhart, no need to pay two months or both contracts. Order the PAC code, wait about three weeks and then give the new company your PAC code and within 2 days you'll be ported over. Of course there may be a few days overlap where you technically paying for both, but this way you should minimise the cost. With regards to whether ordering the PAC also clasifies as giving notice, I just called Vodafone and they said my account hadn't be marked for closing and that if I used my PAC code my account would be closed and I would just pay the remainder of the month. I explained that I didn't want to pay for the month (because I would then effectively be paying both) and that I wanted to give notice and then use my PAC code close to the end of that notice period (and before the notice period and PAC runs out) and they said I could do that, but that I needed to do it in writing by going to the Vodafone website and emailing them via the 'contact us' link on the site.

So for anyone else switching from a 30 day rolling contract, be aware that ordering PAC code is not the same as giving 30 days notice. Sure they'll close your account as soon as the code goes through, but you'll land up paying for that month as a result.

    OK thanks Jon

So if I ask for my Pac days 20 days before my contract ends and use it that day. I will have to pay for an extra 10 days at the end of my contract.

Sorry just trying to make sure I understand

    Cheers

No problem. When ever you ask for your pac you'll have to pay 30 days from that date, doesn't matter when you use it as you're contracted to give those 30 days notice.

So, yes. If you use the pac 20 days after you get it you'll be changed for 10 more days...

This is incorrect. The contract termination notice period is taken to commence on the date of issue of the PAC and not the date when requested.

Quite correct, but they should be able to give you the code over the phone when you call in which case it the same. They some times have to post them out but even that should only add one to two days.

It would be sheer folly to assume that requesting a PAC equates to 'giving notice' of your plans to terminate your contract. t MAY do, but htere is no guarantee this will be the case.

I requested a PAC because I wanted my number (only) moved, I wanted my contract to continue as before with any number they wished to apply to the account. This was exactly what happened.

It would be dangerous to think moving the number ended the contract, as the T&C require you to give notice of your intention to cease the contract. A PAC request only gives notice of a number port, nothing more.

Since all contracts now demand you give them access to modify your credit file - there is no point in hoping, give notice of departure and request a PAC if you need one, and no NOT request a PAC if you don't care either way.
