Stuck In Denom Contract Help

Hi
Big fan of the forums and Martin's tips, this is my first thread! I've got a pressing question about cancelling bills, I am a student living in a rented house. Apparently being the most organised I am the one lumped with the repsonsibility of sorting out the bills for phone, broadband, gas, water and electricity. We are moving out in a month's time so thought it should be time to phone and cancel everything. I phoned Demon to cancel my monthly broadband subscription but was told if I cancelled now I would still have to pay until November because it was a yearly contract. This seemed insane and ridiculous so I asked to talk to a manager but was told none were there. Is there anything I can do or will I have to try and convince my housemates to pay for 5 months of nothing? This is a real nuisance as I should be revising for my exams. Also I was pretty sure I made it clear to them I was a student and would be moving out in july when I created the account with them last november
Thanks
Patrick

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

How is it insane when you agreed at the start of the contract to the 12 month contract? You would have to pay the remaining months left on the contract to fulfil the minimum term (i.e. till Nov)pjbltd wrote:I phoned Demon to cancel my monthly broadband subscription but was told if I cancelled now I would still have to pay until November because it was a yearly contract. There should be a manager about, because the're not exactly gonna let the employees run wild around the office are they? Maybe the manager is away due to the Bank holiday?...so I asked to talk to a manager but was told none were there.
In my opinion, you would have to try and convince your other flatmates to pay the 5 months or, if you or the other flatmates don't have broadband connection at home, then, would they/you want broadband at home, then you could transfer the billing address to them and they would have to pay for the remainder of the contract whilst getting broadband access? Is there anything I can do or will I have to try and convince my housemates to pay for 5 months of nothing?
If they only had 12 month contracts and you agreed to it then you need to fulfil it.Also I was pretty sure I made it clear to them I was a student and would be moving out in july when I created the account with them last november
I think that this is the best option (getting everyone to pay for a service that they won't be using) because, if you gave it another flatmate they might at first be able to pay it but say they have 2 months left and can't pay the bill, then that person's history payment may get affected (all because they wanted to fulfil the remainder of the contract), if you see what I mean.
I have not tried to flame you in my response, I would just say that hopefully, the other flatmates should be happy (but reluctantly) to pay for the remainder of the contract, albeit you won't be using it in that house, if you don't wanna be breaking the law by breaking the contract agreement. I would just say that the start of the contract is a bit unfortunate timing (to have set it up in November). You (and your other flatmates) will just have to learn from this costly mistake and try to plan things a bit better next time. It sounds like you should have gone for a monthly only rolling contract instead of a 12 month contract with another company.
I hope this helps you though and I hope everythings gets sorted.

I agree with the above - shouldn't have signed up to a 12 month contract.... surely you could have worked that out from the beginning
tbh honest saying you were a student doesnt affect anything (unless they offered a student contract)
seems to have been ill planned
you may be able to move the contract to your new address, and start it off again, but you'll need to do that nowish, to avoid to have the same response next year0
